Came across this story from the Dayton Daily News today.  It was written right after we beat Fiami last month and just before their game vs Buffalo.  I think the opening paragraphs are interesting:

"John Cooper looked around at the crowd of 10,669 gathered on Saturday at Ohio University’s Convocation Center, listened to the din they were raising and rediscovered the importance of a home-court advantage.

"Miami’s second-year coach believes the crowd played a significant role in the Bobcats reeling off 50 points after halftime – after scoring 32 before intermission – to come from behind and knock off his RedHawks, 82-75, in the latest edition of one of the Mid-American Conference longest and most intense rivalries.

"'I thought what the fans provided them over the last 10 minutes was the rush that they needed,' Cooper said in an interview replayed on Miami’s website. 'We couldn’t match that. That’s what fans can bring. Half of that (at home) would be unbelievable.'”

Charlie always loved the atmosphere at the Convo.  Cooper is at least envious of what we have.

BTW, since that time, Fiami has gone 2-2 in their last four home games, losing the first two to Buffalo and Kent, but winning the last two vs BGSUcks and Akron.  The announced attendance for the four games (in order): 1,084; 1,021; 945; 1,004.  I doubt we'll see much more even though Fiami has won 3 of their last 4, they have a shot at a .500 MAC season and school's still in session down there (spring break starts in two weeks).

Thanks for posting these comments from Coach Cooper.  I don't know him, of course, but he seems to be a class act.

I actually wish Miami could get better attendance.  I remember during the Trent years and in the five years afterward, I attended games at Millett with around 10,000 in attendance.  I remember a couple of games in there where it was packed to the gills.  My daughter is now 28, but I remember taking her with me to a game there when she was a little girl and it was so hot in that arena that her little cheeks were fire red.  Interesting how things have changed.

Ah yes, the famous "that was (not) fun" game among those who cannot appreciate the special atmosphere we have in the Convocation Center.

Seriously though, that was a classic. That 2nd half was amazing. Just like the Toledo game, it had the feel of a high-major atmosphere. We have had too many home loses this year, but when there is the potential for games like Miami and Toledo, I don't know how anyone could stay away. So much fun.

Actually Optimist--looking back, it now "IS" fun.  The points of frustration I noted from that game and the trend we were forming at that point in this season carried over into additional games and are now going to provide us, the fans, some EXTRA basketball!!!   I would say FREE basketballl, but we have to pay to attend Monday nights game and Wednesday's as well.  So maybe if you want to look at it from a positive perspective, we stand the chance of playing 2 extra games next week that we otherwise wouldn't have had the opportunity to play had we not got into the trend of getting down big early/ignoring the post, etc...  So I'm with you,  we get to potentially play Monday and Wednesday now while many of our other friends have to stay at home doing nothing while we get to go play.

BAD basketball = the chance to play to play MORE basketball in the MAC Tournament.  That's Optimistic and Positive isn't it?!  I'm with ya now!

It sounds like Miami works with the same ticket sales team these days that does the tickets for Eastern Michigan. Cole's teams became less competitive gradually the same decade Miami's Hockey team exploded to shift the sport focus on campus. A lot of the students there today probably view Miami as a smaller school that you don't feel compelled to support. Its more of an American East type campus than a MAC with a muscled up large building big school look to it. Its a five minute walk from the Convo to uptown Athens. The Convo may as well be uptown and you can feel the energy on game day radiate to the center of campus.

Something I've never been able to grasp is why didn't Miami build a facility that could work for both hoops and hockey when they build the new building?  The Goggin Ice Center is a top shelf facility.  If it would have been done with having basketball in mind as well as hockey, they'd have a great facility.

As Millett stands, it could be a decent facility if they could get seats closer to the floor.  Of course getting people to show up will still be a problem.

Just doing a quick Google search, it says it takes a team of 40-60 professionals two or more hours to convert an arena from basketball to hockey. Can you imagine the ongoing expense of doing that dozens of times every year? I know BC (and maybe some others) do it for their teams, but it'd be hard to pull off on MAC revenue.

Millett sucks because you can tell it was built as a convocation center first and an arena as an afterthought. It doesn't do either very well, and it looks and feels even worse empty. I lived in Oxford in during the Wally years, and even when it was full it still sucked to watch games there. It's as soulless and the school it serves.

Thanks for sharing that -- not something I considered at all.  Perhaps then Millett just needs gutted for a redo, or bulldozed altogether.

I think Millett can be salvaged and redone on the inside.

What a great line....

The MAC needs Miami to be strong.  From afar it almost feels like the administration over there isn't trying too hard.

Agreed.. I was talking this AM to a long time BSU basketball booster here in Muncie that lurks on BA.....he said "I like how you guys want other schools to be good, not sure I totally get it but I like it". We had a good discussion about BT and WHitford. he likes the hire, I like the hire. I think the MAC is in pretty good shape presently ...the worst job being done right nwo is probably up at CMU.

I don't think they're not trying as much as they're struggling to figure out how important athletics are to the university.

The Ohio University had about a 40 year stretch where athletics were not a real high priority.  Well, at least football.  What's happening at redhawk seems familiar that way.

Of course, O H I O was/is still fabulous even without athletics.  Not so at the other place.

I saw the announced attendance today was a bit over 1700.  Wonder how many of those were Bobcat fans...Very sad...

I want Miami to be good, it's less of a rivalry when they're not.  Yeah, I know, be careful what u wish for, but can u imagine the convo if we were 1-2 in the MAC?

Got the feeling better days may be ahead with Coach Cooper.  He'll never be Charlie, though...

Cooper's a mediocre coach at best. His teams can't play a lick of defense. Miami will never amount to much under him.

I disagree with you on Cooper, JSF.  I think the Miami program is moving in the right direction.

I Thought the defense jumped to the ball, played pressure out top, collapsed in the lane and recovered better than they have for a long time.

If you are totally basing your opinions on metrics and stats then there probably is not a difference. They have looked like a different club over the past season. My eye says they are better down the line as individuals skill wise and in their hustle and desire.

I am not going to defend Cooper as he has not done a lot to impress jbut then he does not have much in the way of players yet and I am not sure that he is going to be able to recruit very welll in the near future. I think he is in the same boat as Billy Taylor....decent coach surrounding himself with less than stellar assistants . That is a recipe for mediocre results.

I like the direction based on what I see in progrees of the individuals and how they play. They got work to do but I think they are a couple of players away from being legit again. If X continues to be mediocre and Cincy has a misstep or 2 maybe he can steal a couple of decent cincy/dayton kids and start to turn recruiting around.

I think he can make a go of it and get them back on track but like everyone else I want them to be legit.

Counterpoint: "Mediocre" would be moving in the right direction, given the state of Miami's program.

I wonder if they drew such a big crowd by giving away argyle socks.   Based on the shots from TWC, it looked like 20%-25% of the crowd was wearing green.

I expect Fiami fans will be their apathetic best again next year.  This year's senior class was Rollins, Edwards, & Felder.  The three of them accounted for 30 of Fiami's 65 ppg and 14 of their 31 rpg.  (McLimans was also a senior but he played only four games so he may be back).  That's a big chunk of your game to lose.  They have decent players coming back but they lack discipline -- lots of erratic play, especially bad shots.

I don't know what's behind it, Miami is terrible in hockey this year, right behind my hometown Colorado College tigers. How long before the hockey enthusiasm wears down?

What seems stange to me in all this is the fact that overall in athletics Miami is doing pretty good, just not in bb and FB. They've had a MAC championship in football rather lately, something we haven't done. They play more of the big boys in FB than we do, but never win.

They came within a hair of winning a hockey I championship and have been good there for years, excluding this year.

They are near the bottom in coaches salaries so it's no wonder they have trouble getting better coaches.

There's some mixed signals to me about where they are headed.

JSF....I couldnt disagree more with your opinion of Coach Cooper.  You are entitiled to your opinion, as everyone can have one!     I have followed Coach Cooper's career for awhile, and I have talked to a number of basketball people that I have great respect for and they all say the same thing about Cooper......"very good coach, and better person" would consolidate and simplify.   Whether or not he can revitalize the program with very little support from the Presidents office remains to be seen.  His teams are doing a lot of very good things from an X & O standpoint, and he has them playing very hard which is not always easy in todays atmosphere of AAU summer scrimmage mentality.
Ask any coach in our region what they think of this guy, and I can promise you that what you will hear is at the opposite end of the court of your opinion.!    I will stick with my coaching friends until I see your resume and career highlights  !!
