I tweeted earlier (@SJackson110) that since 2004, Ohio University is the only team in the MAC to win an NCAA tourney game. Ohio is 3-3, while the rest of the MAC is 0-8. I'll quote Hustle Belt here, "Just give the Bobcats the bid."

This is why the MAC will always be a 1-bid conference. Really Ohio in the past few trips to the NCAA tourney, and Kent in '03 (I'm pretty sure that was the year they made it to the Elite 8) are the bright and shiny moments for the MAC in recent history.

That wasn't always the case though...just the last decade or so.

That's what I'm saying. People talk about how the MAC (especially this year with Toledo having a decent record) should get at least another bid once in awhile, but when it comes down to it, the MAC just isn't very good in the postseason.

You mean, "Thanks everyone in the MAC for being mediocre or worse," right? If the teams in the conference were better, Ohio included, it would get more respect. Look in the mirror. We're part of the problem.

This is true, but Western also did themselves no favors in its non-conference schedule. They had some bad losses and no impressive wins. They were a #14 seed because of their season of work. The seeding had nothing to do with Zippy last year.

Exactly. Apparently people really want a conspiracy, but Akron's performance against VCU had zero to do with WMU's seed. WMU's schedule made sense at the time; coming into MAC play, few people were tabbing the Broncos as a serious threat to win the regular season. They didn't come around until January.

I blame Kent State for only putting up 10 points in the first half against UNLV when they were a #9 seed in 2008. The MAC Champ has been #13-#14-#15-#13-#12-#14 since then.

the MAC is a 1 bid league because only 1 team a year earns a bid, the MAC is not a 1 bid league because _______ (insert whiny conspiracy theory about how the Illuminati purposely deny at large worthy MAC teams a bid for their own evil pleasure, as if the MAC is Charlie Brown and the faceless conspirators are Lucy holding the football).

The facts show that the MAC's regular season performance was its best in a number of years. Paul Graham, I believe the trend now is upward for the MAC when you look at the prospects for the next five years.

The selection committee handles selections and seedings on an individual team basis, based on that particular year. I really don't think a previous season's embarrassment in the NCAA factors in. The MAC improved this season with RPI. Next step is to get more wins over top 50 teams. That will lead to more respect when postseason bids are extended.

 Right, Paul. I remember when the talking heads, led by Dickie V, would extol the virtues of the MAC leading up to and following selection Sunday. Don't think I've heard such talk in nearly 10 years.

Doesn't that timeline coincide with when the MAC collectively decided to cast it's lot with football as it's major emphasis?  And doesn't it also coincide with a whole string of really horrible hiring decisions for basketball coaches by the ADs?

   Jeff, think about the future NBA players from other MAC teams that used to visit the Convo. Not a great number like the ACC or Big 10. But the MAC but most definitely had some quality, exciting talent. That talent has certainly decreased since the change in budget priorities. Maybe I'm channeling The Optimist, but I believe that the talent level might be slowly coming back with recent recruiting efforts.
