I hate to say it but we got outcoached tonight.  Up by 11 at halftime and trailing a few minutes after halftime (great halftime pep talk).  No press used the entire game until a desperation press was used with 2 minutes left in overtime.  Marshall fouls out at the end of regulation and we don't work the ball under the basketball in OT.  We got outcoached and it is shame for a team that went to the Sweet 16 last year with the same players.

Well on the bright side we are a lock for the Sweet 16 in the CBI.

Of course I am assuming there are no quality opponents or good coaches for JC to deal with in the CBI.

Agree.  It still bothers me.  Also, did not like the end where we allowed Akron to run out the clock on our home court.  It is part of the JC attitude of not pressing and being aggressive the entire game!!  I think we will lose the next two games on the road.

Watch out, I've said it in other posts but this is going to be classified as a "reactionary" post. I don' think any other hiring was going to work other than JC but I think next year will be better than this year. I truly believe that Ndour, Bean, Setty, Smith, Kellogg, Hall and Rico will win 24 games, go to the Tourney and make some noise. I just don't think JC is a motivator with JG's guys. It's a pitty.

Don't agree.  This is the best hand that Christian will ever have at OU.  Mark my words.  We will be lucky to win 20 games next year (majority of wins will be against subpar MAC teams).

Bean averaged 8 points in the Big 12....Setty 6 points in the MVC...both respected conferences. Ndour looks athletic and talented and ready to tell Demetrius Treadwell where to stick it. And T.J., Rico and Stevie, along with Jon, Green and Nick will be ready to. If Campbell or Wingfield pan out a little bit this team will rock. We are missing an Ndour type of guy. Reg is tough but slow...Jon is athletic but weak..Ivo is Euro. Ndour is a mix of all. Could you have imagined Ndour against Treadwell tonight!? Holy crap would Demetrius have wet himself!

Oh I don't know we may actually win our first non conference road game under JC by next season.  I mean a lot of new coaches who inherit teams with almost the entire roster from a Sweet 16 team struggle for that first road W.

I disagree.  We went on our run.  Akron went on their run.  We were in position to win that game.  I watched on TV and then watched the last five+ minutes of regulation again.  Opportunities were there to win in regulation.  And, we missed those opportunities.

Tought loss for sure.  But, it was a great game to watch.  Painful result.  But, exciting hoops.

Groce is a cult of personality type coach.  He's gone.  Is the team not humming like he had us in late March?  No.  But, Christian had us in place to win the game today I think.

At this rate my love for JC is pretty much on par with TOS. That is to say, not very much.

5-7 versus teams with winning records. The W's being Richmond, WMU, Toledo, Kent x2.
1-6 versus RPI Top 100 teams. The lone W Richmond.

Beyond the Richmond win and the WMU win on the road, this team has shown NOTHING. Sure, we're a good MAC team. We'll still get the #2 seed. We'll still most likely advance to the MAC tourney finals (and promptly get drilled a 3rd time by Akron). We'll probably get a nifty NIT bid (where we'll get drilled and sent home in the first round).  Maybe that's good enough for some people. Ah yes, that same all too familiar feeling I had about OU basketball that I had during TOS tenure. Eh...at least he found ways to knock off some marquee teams every now and then.

This teams swagger, moxy, toughness, and most importantly confidence left Athens with Groce.

That isn't to say Christian is a bad coach per se. Nor that he'll never have success here at Ohio (honestly it will be hard NOT to with how utterly terrible the MAC is from top to bottom). However, at this point it's painfully obvious that he was a horrible horrible fit for THIS team, THIS year.

It's a true shame and a sad, sad way to send out this group of seniors.

Boy, a lot of expert prognosticators on this board.

Never, ever wear a road uniform for a big game at home. It gives officials (rocket scientists that they are who were already in over their heads for this game) more opportunities to get confused and give the edge to the white unis.

Kretzer had the game of his life after averaging 6 per game and Treadwell who Akron stats said he shoots 48% from the line, made 7 of 9.

We can beat that team, but, well, we haven't  been good when we needed to be - twice in a row..

Interestingly enough, the Dallas Cowboys never have this problem. And the Akron Zips didn't have this problem at home vs. Ohio earlier.

I get it, but it's a stretch.

I agree that it is in all of our best interests to officially move on from Groce and thoughts of what could have been.  But I think it would be much easier to do if JC gave us more to celebrate as a result of his coaching.  Call us spoiled but what he has done this year falls along the lines of "minimum expectations", especially given the team he has inherited.  If we would have taken a couple of the non conference road games against " name" opponents we would probably be in his camp more.

This season, while more successful in terms of Ws and Ls reminds me of TOS's first two years when we had Brandon Hunter, Steve Esterkamp, Sonny Johnson, etc. and had an overall losing record I believe.

The way I see it he has two potential opportunities to salvage the season:
1) Win the MAC tourney and get the auto bid or
2) win out, lose in Cleveland but make the NIT and go on a nice run.

Not going to happen.  We lose to BG and Buffalo and barely beat Miami going into tournament.  We will be lucky to win our semifinal game.

Pack it up...it has been determined.

Ohio basketball 2013 is over. Nothing to see. All games are lost.

I don't see option 2 as "salvaging the season." Not that I think our school is like a Kentucky and can turn up its nose at the NIT, but after being within a point of the Elite Eight last year and having everybody back, playing in a weak league, the season will qualify as a disappointment if it doesn't end in the NCAAs.

Funny how the Akron team became better than us with two losses from their starting five from last year and no losses for us.  Makes you wonder???????

Since I'll be out of town for the Miami game, the silver lining is that hosting a first-round NIT game would give me a chance to see the guys at home one more time!  For those who need the reminder, like medler's post, this too is sarcasm.  All seriousness aside, this sets up the MAC perfectly to get two teams in the NCAA when we beat Akron in the final game.   That JC's he's really crafty! Go OHIO!

O'Shea won 54% of MAC games; Groce 53%. Groce had a good run late last year. If we don't beat Akron by a point in Cleveland last year we have no run last year and Groce is still here.

For those blaming JC for our "poor" year and given your above comment have you ever think that Ivo and Nick are having subpar years. And given that do you expect that we would be better than how we ended last year? The coach can't be out on the court. Execution is up to the guys. Poorly defending the 3 hurts. That's not the fault of JC.

Akron played better and deserved to win. They appear to be a better team this year.  We have no one who can handle Treadwell. Zeke has improved a lot. And they have some clutch3 point shooters.

I am so tired of this crap.  NC , Mr. Marshall is the difference, not the coach.   He is really good around the basket. Intimating!!  Another fact isthat they lost two starters from last year and have replaced them with two players , Treadwell and Kretzer( freshman) who are much stronger players.  We did not even recruit Kreutzer, who was in our backyard.  That was JG  DECISION. I am not sure that we can control Marshsll or Treadwell the next time we play(hopefully).  By the way, how many poor losses did JG have and I remember those naysayers were on the board killing JG and on Dustin Ford indicating that  he could not coach the big guys.  Yet you naysayers were in their bed because they had a great run. Everyone likes a winner.

DJ did not have a great game. He had only 4 assists, Abrieu had 9 assists. I know that he had 29 points.   JC took him out and reamed him out at the 4 minute mark during second half when 'kron outscored us 15-0.  After that DJ had improvement in his game.  I really thought that JC made some good moves inthe second half that was very successful during the 1st half because DJ was in control.

My last thought is that in the OT, Keely was outright fouled, it was not called, and during that play 'kron got a throwout for an easy layout.  This resulted in a 4 point turnaround not in our favor and completely took us out of the game.

All of you naysayers coaching from the couch have no idea what happens in practice, game  coaching and strategy. You have no idea what is said to players.    Go coach your intramural teams, or whatever  because your discussion only creates poor debate. I really don't think that you benefit the pride of Ohio University.  How in the hell can you call yourself Bobcats.  I really don't want you on my team because you are losers.
Be positive you will have a better life.

Wake up and smell the coffee.  Anyway, Marshall is not a good player.  He is lucky if he gets picked in the NBA draft.  He is slow, does not get off his feet, bad attitude, and lazy.  There is no one in the NBA who wants to take a chance on him.  We have the same time as last year.  We should not get beat by Akron on our home court!!!!!
