Good news for Marshall.  Under his direction, that program was awful and undisciplined.  Assuming we get them back on the schedule soon, I hope they improve.

I wouldn't say they were awful ... .500.

2010–11 Marshall 22–12 9–7 6th CIT First Round
2011–12 Marshall 21–14 9–7 6th NIT First Round
2012–13 Marshall 13–19 6–10 9th
2013–14 Marshall 11–22 4–12 15th
Marshall: 67–67 28–36

Slipped the past 2 years which likely led to his demise which he probably isn't complaining about if $600K is the buyout.

Isn't this thread supposed to be titled TOS to Marshall?

The DeAndre Kane thing has to drive Marshall fans crazy.

back in my early years, they were a bb school, Leo Byrd and Hal Greer, they were players
Of course, that was 50 years ago. Football has been so dominant since their AA days that bb has taken a back seat.

They have three postseason wins ever, and they are 0-5 all-time in the NCAA tournament. Marshall never has been a basketball school, even when they had a future Hall of Famer at guard.

They were a basketball school in the 60s and 70s.  I grew up watching them on TV.  Number of postseason wins isn't the only criteria.

They had a lot of basketball talent during those years.  A ticket to their gym, Memorial Fieldhouse, was the hottest ticket in town.  They played a pretty competitive schedule.  I remember one time when Al McGuire brought his Marquette team into Huntington.

The D'Antoni brothers played during this era.  Russell Lee...others.

Boals will be high on the list for this job, if he chooses to go after it.  The Herd certainly had a strong program back in the 60's and 70's with the D'Antoni's, Russel Lee to name a few. Only a few of us are old enough to remember back that far.  The field house was a great place to play with a large and vocal fan base.  A very tough place to get a "W" !  Once got hit with a PBR can down the stretch in a close game.!

Does anybody know what their basketball budget is?   I can see this being an attractive job if it's reasonably good.

Of course, you don't know what you are talking about. As was mentioned earlier, NCAA tourney wins are just one part of the story.  Their overall winning record is better than Ohio, they have a national title (small school) and have had many great players who ended being All-Americans. I don't recall Ohio being ranked 12Th or better ever at the end of the year like Marshall has. Cam Henderson, their coach for 20 years, is credited by most historians as having invented the zone defense.  He was 358-158 (69.4%) from 1935-1955, and played and beat plenty of the big boys.

Anyway, you probably are too young and/or foolish to know anything about things more than 10 years ago.

Marshall has been irrelevant in basketball since the 60s it sounds like. O NCAA tournament wins (which isnt exactly something that started "10 years ago") is all you need to say about Herdistan.

I see Marshall in a similar light at Ball State.  A bad hire and some bad luck have them where they are but they are a sleeping giant and could very well improve quickly.

First of all, the personal attacks are cool.

I think it would be very, very hard to find anyone without bias to say Marshall is historically a better basketball school than Ohio. This all goes without saying that Ohio, in the grand scheme of things, has maybe the 80th best basketball program historically in the country. Even Ohio to be considered a "basketball school" is probably pushing it, but they can at least point to fan support and postseason success (aka the reason teams play) to fuel the case. It also helps that historically, our football team stinks. All those factors go into being a basketball school.

This also goes without saying that football far and away is the sport people think of when Marshall is mentioned. Maybe this was a toss up 50-60 years ago, but not now. That is kind of what happens when you have a movie made about a tragedy, you have an All-time receiver and you 2 National Titles.

my initial statement can be seen and I was just trying to add a little historical context. you chose to say they were never a bb school. I'm just saying they were at one time.

Sorry about the personal attack!

Not saying it's better, they had their time and it's over, but give them some credit.

I was watching the Lakers/Spurs game and BIll Simmons said he thinks Dantoni could be a successful college coach where he could recruit specifically to his system and I got to thinking, wouldnt he be a slam dunk hire for Marshall? He is an alum and from the area, has big name recognition and has had a ton of success in the NBA. I dont think he will be back after this season for LA so he could be available.

You may be right, cc, but the 1100 news on WSAZ last night said that there was interest by "both parties."

I can't see him doing it either, but you never know.  D'Antoni is a native of one of the most "backcreek" parts of WV.  He has an attachment to Marshall, helps them with fundraising, etc.  I'm sure he's a multi-millionaire by now so money may not be a crucial factor.  I'd say one of the biggest negative factors is that he's never had to recruit.  He's always been a professional coach.

That would be awesome. And I would suddenly want Marshall back in the MAC ASAP.

The beast must be fed.  Electronic media demand content, without much regard for degree of truth.   Shaka got to get paid will be coaching at VCU, 'Cuse, MichState, 'quette and many other schools next season.

Also very important to be first with news, regardlesss of veracity.
