SI senior writer Pete Thamel tweeted that sources have told him Christian is a legitimate candidate for the HC opening.

Also, FWIW, Cal's HC Mike Montgomery announced his retirement this morning.

Can't say I like hearing this already. He's been doing a fantastic job recruiting his system and we were finally going to be able to see it live. Maybe we will be able to counter offer.

He left a bad program in a good conference to come to Ohio. I hope he sees BC as a similar situation to the one he left a couple years ago. I agree about him being good for Ohio.

TOS might spontaneously combust if that happened.

It is hard to begrudge someone the opportunity to triple their salary.  Not many coaches get the invitation to coach in the ACC against legends. Hard decision, otherwise, as he certainly could win forever in the MAC.

Looks like JC wasn't quite old enough to fit the Solich mold.  This could all be false, but the fact his name surfaced, means that he is still open to leaving if the price is right and there is partial demand for him.  This could be the prefect storm job for a guy like him, so we may be in good shape if someone else pops up.

I thought about this at the end of the season -- that JC would come up in reports. I didn't want to bring it up on the boards because I didn't want to give anyone any ideas.

BA.com is very influential.

Influential indeed!  I don't know, I'm not sure I believe these reports.   As I recall JC said he came to Ohio because he saw an opportunity to elevate the program beyond that of the typical MAC team.  His wife is an Ohio grad.  His job at Ohio is just beginning, it seems and he strikes me as the kind of coach that wants to see the process through (so long as he believes the school administration supports him-see his time @ TCU).

Of course, almost all college coaches follow the money (not a judgment-I'd do it too were I them) so I could be full of it.

Edit:  love Ohio Stunter's comment about Boals-that's funny!  I had the same thought.

Edit #2:  I thought about starting a "TOS to Ohio" thread but decided it would be too tacky and would jinx things

Miami's former AD is now at BC and he hired a MAC coach for the football team so of course he's going to show interest in the winningest bball coach in the MAC with experience improving a bottom dwelling team in a high major conference.

But I would be surprised to see JC quickly throw away a job with this kind of job security and support for a rebuilding project in a league where finishing in the top half would take a miracle. I doubt if an extra $600k/yr over the next couple of years would be worth it in the long run.

BC plays in an arena that seats 8600, their average attendance last year was 4200.

An extra $600K per year is some serious scratch.   Is that what the pay difference would be?

Boston Globe says the leading candidate is Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins.  Not sure what SI by "legitimate" -- is it legitimate from BC's end (meaning he's on a list somewhere) or from JC's (meaning he's been contacted and didn't say no)?

BC has seemed to be overmatched since going to the ACC and I'm not sure it'll get any better with Syracuse and Pitt now in the conference.  They had success early on with players who were recruited while they were in the BE but have steadily declined.

Bacari Alexander also a name.  He can bring Jon Sanderson with him from Michigan.

I believe in Jim Christian's (and recently the new VB coach) press conferences I believe it was said that we were at a point as a program where we were able to hire current head coaches so that the hit/miss possibility of hiring an assistant/first time HC wouldn't any longer be a factor.

I'm sure things like that are always subject to change, and it sounded right at the time, but if/when JC leaves, sticking to that would rule out Boals/Kuwik/Bacari/etc.

I agree I doubt he leaves. This would be a very bizarre time to leave, these next couple years are going to be special.

Nice to see folks in this thread appreciating JC and the job he is doing.  Stay with us coach!!

FYI - Boston.com is reporting Amaker turned down the BC job and...

"Boston College has since steered its search to a second group of candidates, reportedly including Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins and St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt" (who has the backing of Flutie and others).

Their article is pulled from here - (includes Tim O'Shea mention)

I'd put $100 on "The Field" in this coaching search

Not a glowing endorsement

Boston College may very well have thrown his name around in discussion but I am not buying that JC is seriously interested.

I heard everything I needed to hear from JC at his opening press conference. He has the vision of what OHIO basketball could be with some proper nurturing and he believes he is the guy capable of doing that. Bonus, he wants his family in this part of the country.

BC is a good job, but I don't view it as anywhere close to the same kind of opportunity that Illinois was for Groce.

I trust JC.

bcinterruption blogger says JC's Miami years are major conference experience.

Given his rather haughty opinion that Chestnut Hill matters in the hoops world, I'm sure a correction to Miami of Ohio would knock JC down another peg.

My favorite analysis regarding the BC job is, "Tommy Amaker was always Plan A.  Since he turned down the job, Boston College is on to Plan C because no Catholic institution would go to Plan B."
