" Its the end of the world (or at least the NCAA) as we know it" .

According to most of sports pundits around here, if Tenn. and Virginia are successful in the anti trust lawsuit they filed today against the NCAA, the
organization is "toast".

The NCAA's business model is illegal and the Supreme Court's said pretty clearly that if this reaches them they'll say so, too.

The NCAA is in trouble here; it's why they rushed to propose that NIL option where the NILs run through the schools. It's the only way they can wrestle back oversight. But it very much remains to be seen as to whether or not the schools have any interest in being governed by the NCAA anymore.

If you're the SEC or Big 10, what does the NCAA do for you at this point?

It's not nothing, but how the NCAA handles tournaments in all sports other than football is top tier. I don't know if the Big 10 or SEC want to handle all of that. Not saying they couldn't, but that's a big ask.

NCAA does not run the football tournament or championships.

My apologies, I misunderstood your first sentence. And I agree with you.

The closer this gets to a job/professionalism the further we get away from kids going to college and playing sports and schools hiring athletes to represent their schools. If that happens, will fans treat college athletes with the same lack of respect for poor performance that they do pro athletes? At that point, they're no longer a student first. Something to ponder.

When you read the IJ thread or people's thoughts on Wiz, do you not see a lack of respect for poor performance? Nobody is asking about Wiz's report card.

It wasn't too many years ago, that posters who criticized a player were "reminded" that those players were students first. I haven't seen a "take is easy with the criticism" post in some times much less a critical post being deleted. When I was talking about lack of respect I guess I was thinking more about in game in the Convo booing of players which you see in the pro ranks all the time.

I dunno, man. On my time on this board, there's always been criticism of OU athletes for their athletic performance and don't think that's ever been off-limits because they're students first.

If I think back to my earliest days following the Bobcats, Marin Bota was a student. That didn't stop Bobcat fans from being very critical of his ability to impact a basketball game. And when folks were critical of Mark Sears transferring, I didn't see anybody looking at Alabama's US New & World Report ranking or whatever.

Realistically, fans have expectations for athletes that have nothing at all to do with academics. Ironically, it seems like people here are far less willing to be critical of Jeff Boals than they are of some of the individual players he recruited.

If there's anybody who bears responsibility for the roster, its Boals. Who isn't a student, and is our highest paid employee. Yet there's a 6 page thread on IJ. There's been some critiques here and there on Boals, but overall he's dodged far more criticism than players like IJ and Wiz.

And some Bobcat fans do have expectations for athletes that have something to do with academics.

Few things make me more proud to be an Ohio University alum and a Bobcat fan than hearing a Bobcat athlete, typically a football or men's basketball player, while being interviewed coming across as well-spoken and intelligent. It seems I'm rarely disappointed in this sense. Yet, we all hear the occasional interview of major college athletes who are not the most articulate.

Sorry, must be my browser, story still will not come up. I googled it, interesting, going to be much like the Northwestern case 9 years ago. Still not going to apply to any public schools. As, I always say will be interesting to see play out. My personal opinion, it will be the end of college sports.

I don't really get the "end of college sports" argument.

Usually, when people make it they make it through the lens of how things work now and cite things like Title IX, etc. The entire framework is shifting if not outright collapsing. It seems shortsighted to assume there's no path forward with athletes designated as employees.

Labor law is far more gray than people realize, and there are all sorts of charge outs by industry, and none of the parties involved have any incentive to watch this collapse and die.
