If that happens, will fans treat college athletes with the same lack of respect for poor performance that they do pro athletes? At that point, they're no longer a student first. Something to ponder.
When you read the IJ thread or people's thoughts on Wiz, do you not see a lack of respect for poor performance? Nobody is asking about Wiz's report card.
It wasn't too many years ago, that posters who criticized a player were "reminded" that those players were students first. I haven't seen a "take is easy with the criticism" post in some times much less a critical post being deleted. When I was talking about lack of respect I guess I was thinking more about in game in the Convo booing of players which you see in the pro ranks all the time.
I dunno, man. On my time on this board, there's always been criticism of OU athletes for their athletic performance and don't think that's ever been off-limits because they're students first.
If I think back to my earliest days following the Bobcats, Marin Bota was a student. That didn't stop Bobcat fans from being very critical of his ability to impact a basketball game. And when folks were critical of Mark Sears transferring, I didn't see anybody looking at Alabama's US New & World Report ranking or whatever.
Realistically, fans have expectations for athletes that have nothing at all to do with academics. Ironically, it seems like people here are far less willing to be critical of Jeff Boals than they are of some of the individual players he recruited.
If there's anybody who bears responsibility for the roster, its Boals. Who isn't a student, and is our highest paid employee. Yet there's a 6 page thread on IJ. There's been some critiques here and there on Boals, but overall he's dodged far more criticism than players like IJ and Wiz.
