My list in no order (subject to change after hearing other suggestions – also realize a couple of these are very unlikely, but wonder what they would say if they get a call knowing that they should easily coach a winner next year)

Assistant coach approach

Jeff Boals – OHIO grad

Chris Collins

Jayson Gee – former OHIO assistant

Chris Holtmann – former OHIO assistant (actually head coach at Gardner-Webb)

Chris Walker

Greg Gard

Mark Montgomery

Dwayne Stephens

Matthew Graves

Kevin Kuwik – former OHIO assistant

Pat Kelsey – quit XU because of missing out on family time

Richard Pitino

Fired coach approach (some are actually assistants now)

John Pelphrey

Bobby Lutz

Dino Gaudio – OHIO grad

Norm Roberts

Todd Lickliter

Keno Davis

Jeff Capel

Karl Hobbs

Ron Everhart

Bruce Weber

Jerry Wainwright

Larry Hunter – well, you know

Ernie Kent

High Major Scoop throwing spaghetti against a wall: http://twitter.com/highmajorscoop/statuses/18520636264769...

Christian strikes me as silly. Mike Rhoades, however, is a winner. He's probably moving up a chair and I don't know if Schaus would give him the keys, which is what it would like take to get him to leave Richmond. Jayson Gee isn't a fit with what we're doing down here. Gaudio? Meh.

2.  Thinking "out of the box" and, perhaps a "Solich type hire": Mike D'Antoni.  He's from the area, and he knows how to win college games in Green and White.

Did I miss his college experience?

Green & White ---- Marshall (as a player)

So you guys want a guy who has zero experience in recruiting?  No thanks.

Any idea how much Boals is making now?

Knowing both Coach Groce and Coach Holtmann and knowing what we currently have returning next year I think Coach Holtmann would be an excellent choice.  There would be very little change and Ohio could continue to be successful come March!  Bring back Coach Holtmann.  Once a Bobcat always a Bobcat!

Holtmann would be my second choice after Boals........but won't be upset if Holtmann gets the job....or even wants the job.

Now in reverse order

3) Dustin Ford. Good , knows the current system. JG is holding out for an assitsant salary - My bet it's for Dustin.

2) Jeff Boals  Again, good. Thad Matta man like JG should flow right into the system. Down side - harder to fire an alumni if it doesn't work out.  BUT we fished in that pond last time. Maybe it's time to think out of the box?

1) Richard Pitino

.

I'm going on a limb with Richard Pitino, but the pedigree is strong, and he's got vast experience on teams that have won conference and NCAA titles. He's really young (29 or so I think) and he's been in the area with Tom Herrion before.

The 'quote' is true. Young, hungry, and I bet would love to get out to prove he's not just Rick's boy.

Pitino seems REALLY intriguing to me. You would think we might have some history there as Rick Pitino did have some very flattering things to say about Ohio when he was back in Kentucky PLUS we did play Louisville this year tight.

The only downside is he is MUCH more likely to be gone in 1-2 years.

So now we are onto the makings of the coaching list. How important is the chance the coach will stay here and be our Shaka/Stevens coach? And does that affect our thinkig of who we want hired.

I am really afraid the reason so many people want Boals (myself included) is the chance he might stick around for 10+ years. But is he really that type? While we'd like to think he would be our Shaka/Stevens... would he? Or could he have aspirations to move on to a bigger job? I don't know him that close to know whether as long as we can up his pay, he would be willing to stay here for 10 years?

So let's say the choice comes down to Coach X who is a young outsider like Groce and most likely would leave once an Illinois type job comes open or Coach Boals/Ford who most likely would stay longer, what type of coach do we want?

And for giggles... the 3rd option... a Solich type guy, or an older coach (or maybe a better word is not a hot young assistant) who got his shot and failed but is still a good coach that can keep Ohio at the top of the MAC but more likely to not move on since he already had that taste?

I honestly think the very vast majority of candidates would leave after 3-4 years for a much higher paying job if the chance came up, Boals included. I think the days of young coaches staying at a school forever are long gone; I'm not sure Ohio will ever see another Kermit Blosser, Bill Hess or Jim Snyder again. I don't see Boals as staying forever too just because he's an Ohio grad. If he wins in Ohio like we hope he does if given the job, I could see Boals leaving to coach the Evil Empire when Matta leaves-it's no given that Groce gets that job.

And these are the days of Stevens, Shaka & Few staying at mid-majors despite major offers from bigtime programs?

Really it will come down to sustaining the success we had this year so more money can come into the program. If our top paying salary is 500k then yes, our coach will ALWAYS leave for the higher paying job.

BUT, if we can keep winning and can earn more money from it and can someday up that 500k to closer to a million a year, then we can have that chance.

It might not happen within the next 5-7 years, but can we hope in 10 years if we continue making the NCAA tournament and winning a couple games there that the money can come in to eventually be able to up our coaching salary?

3) Ron Hunter

Should deserve a look: Orlando Antigua. That recruiting pedigree is incredible.

I think the coaches you mention have 6 figure yearly salaries; I it's easier for them to stay where they're at when they make that kind of coin versus our ability to pay a b-ball coach $300,000 a year. I agree with you, hopefully if we keep winning and if we sustain our recent success, hopefully the necessary money to really compete at the highest level rolls in.

I like Ruck's list a lot, but I would switch up the order just a little:

Jeff Boals (ideally, retaining Dustin as main assistant)
Dustin Ford
Bacari Alexander

We have such a great group of players, I'd like someone who is familiar to them and going to maintain continuity as much as possible.

Boals would be great.  However, I worry that OU is just going to become a springboard school for coaches if we continue to win games/MAC Championships/go deeper into the NCAA Tourney, without paying out a reasonable salary to keep a winning coach.  Granted there are more things to look at other than salary, but in today's society...its a big one.

If we are a springboard every 4-5 years that's a good thing in my opinion. That means we are always winning.

That has worked for Xavier.

Gillen --> Prosser -> Matta --> Miller --> Mack

I'll cool with a springboard school, it means we continue to win, get national exposure, etc.

In order to keep a coach..salary is very important
in order to increase salary... fan base/season ticket holders, increased revenue is important
in order to increase fan base/season ticket holder/revenue...winning is important.

Until we have a fan base that is going to shell out the $$$, a springboard school is the best we can hope for.

And they think they've finally landed on a guy in Mack who might stay around for a while because he's a Cincinnati native and Xavier grad. Although it was a rough year and a few irrational fans wanted him out, he's solid for now.

+ 1000000000000

I have no problem being a springboard, and hopefully if you keep springboarding people up the money will flow into the program enough that one day instead of springboard up, they springboard into the pool of staying in Athens.

It was a rough year there in conference play, but it ended with a Conference title appearance, Sweet 16, and the #14 ranked recruiting class in the country heading into next year. Not bad for a down year.

Kent State is a better example for trying to keep going and maybe missing on their next coach.

But really... you just have to trust in those making the decision. And success begets success.

Finding the 1st one is just a start,  the 2nd one is the key. So really we are on the precipice of going the Xavier/Kent State route or being the many that fail. Once you can get that 2nd coach though it starts being easier as there is enough talent and hopefully you start grooming your own replacements (Like if we pick Boals and he continues that success and then maybe Dustin Ford is ready to step in if he is kept on staff). Or you become known as that spot and then you have your pick of up and comming assistants and as long as you have the right people making those decisions, then you should be ok, or at least have a higher chance of keeping it going.

But hiring the next coach is going to be the lynchpin to whether we will go that route or fall back.

This is my fear.  Stating the obvious, but the next hire is critical...and the one after that and the one after that...

How many  "one great year and done's" have there bee?.  Need to keep building and building.  I think we've got the makeup to be able to be a program, but it's a lot easier said than done.

First, we've had two good years and Groce laid the groundwork. But yes, the next hire will be critical. The question I have is: what's the alternative? We turn back to a guy like TOS or worse and let the program falter. I highly doubt Schaus and McDavis want that again. Those guys are committed to making Ohio athletics viable. They'll get the job done. It all starts at the top, just like in any sports organization. If the people at the top are committed to success, then all of the pieces will fall into place.

Boals is my pick, and hopefully Dustin stays on as well.  Slap the associate head coach title on him if you need to, and make sure he gets a decent pay raise.

I'd start Boals at $250k, and increase it by $25k a year as long as he hits 20 wins.  I would also like to see it have more lucrative incentives than Groce's contract.  If he wins the MAC regular season, a $25k bonus.  If he gets the team into the NCAA Tournament, it's a $25k bonus paid immediately, and then bump his next year's salary by another $25k.  For each NCAA Tourney win, I'd add another $25k onto the next year's salary, and double that for each round.  So, this year Groce would have received $25k bonus for making the Tourney, then increased his salary by $25k for the Michigan win, and $50k for the USF win.  (UNC win would have been worth an $100k bump under my proposal.)

This really promotes consistent success, and could really reward the coach for multiple runs in the NCAA Tournament.  I'd have no problem paying a coach in the $600k-$750k range (base) if he earned it.  We should all want Ohio to be the most lucrative coaching position in the MAC.
