Here's the official thread to discuss finding JG's replacement.

You get 3 choices (listed in order please) and a salary.

Feel free to add comments.

1. Dustin Ford
2. Danny Manning - Tulsa Bound
3. Richard Pitino
4. Boals / Antigua

I've told people close to me, I'd do the following:

3 year deal for Dustin. $300k for the first year. $350k for years 2 and 3 with performance incentives all 3 years. Ohio retains the ability to cut him loose on the cheap after Year 1 if things aren't working out. I don't think anyone questions that Dustin can Coach during the games. I think the big question is recruiting. I'm in major favor of continuity at this point, and going outside the Groce family/system with a full cupboard of returnees is a bad idea. Dustin's proven his worth over the last few years, and it's time to see if he's ready. I feel pretty good that he can get next year's team into position to dance, what I don't know is whether he can manage a program from soup to nuts and build on the existing foundation laid by Groce. It's a risky choice, but I really think we need to be level headed about stability and continuity right now, especially after this Sweet 16 run and the roster situation next year.

I'm going on a limb with Richard Pitino, but the pedigree is strong, and he's got vast experience on teams that have won conference and NCAA titles. He's really young (29 or so I think) and he's been in the area with Tom Herrion before.

Boals or Orlando Antigua would probably be #4.

Ok, you guys are up....

(Edit, had to pull Danny Manning down as he took Tulsa. Added Boals / Antigua as #4.)

Not on the Dustin Ford bandwagon, sorry!  Jeff Boals has been at Akron, Marshall, and OSU.  He is a graduate and a guy who can work with our bigs.  I think a 250,000 to 300,000 starting contract seems to be appropriate with incentives to grow contract based on MAC tourney wins and NCAA wins.  Same basic structure as JG.  That being said, Boals to OHIO seems too logical and therefore a dark horse might emerge.

Why Dickerson? 71-85 over five years? No postseasons. No thanks.

Holtman has 23 wins in 2 years at G-W. That's 7 less then we had this year.

They've also gotten bounced in the first round of the Big South Tourney both years.

I'm just not seeing the kind of tangible results that would deem him worthy of a promotion to our big chair.

How long till people start mentioning Rhodes, Larry Hunter, and the usual cast of characters from the last search?

Jeff is also an OHIO (the state) native. I said $300K start because I think we need to raise the bar - from the beginning - performance incentives on top of that of course.

I like Love's current list. I'd add Lickliter to the pool. I look at what Alford has done at New Mexico and agree with borna..you gotta toss his time at Iowa. Two Sweet 16s at Butler and he wouldn't make that Iowa mistake again. Plus, he coached Groce, so there is lots of continuity in system. MAC experience with EMU and Miami. Maybe a bit old, but it doesn't seem to be hurting Dambrot.

If you want to go away from assistant and to a current head coach, this guy wouldn't be the worst choice.

Andrew Toole, Robert Morris.  Just thinking past the Boals and Holtmann

I like him a lot. We know he can win in the Convo, too.

Record hasn't been there, but he came into a crappy situation and I've seen improvement in the team. I think they'll be better next year if he stays.

Jeff Boals first.

But I'd be okay with either Dwyane Stephens or Dane Fife.

Illini's back up plan was a high school coach, maybe we put some feelers out to Trimble High School and get a local guy.

I know I will get slammed for this, but this guy is about due to take a gig.  Might need to up compensation, but has background and coaching mentor to succeed.  Again, Boals is the man if he wants the job, just throwing out candidates that might bite for this loaded team.

Chris Collins, Midwest guy from burbs of Chicago.

1. Jeff Boals
2.  Thinking "out of the box" and, perhaps a "Solich type hire": Mike D'Antoni.  He's from the area, and he knows how to win college games in Green and White.

Mike D'Antoni? What is Phil Jackson not available?

Not advocating at all, but since this is where coaches are being discussed figured the place to ask.  How far away is Kevin Kuwik from taking over a program?

Out of the box:  Danny Nee for us old timers.

Our current roster running Seven Seconds or Less would be something amazing. No way we can afford him, though. Too used to NBA paychecks.

1 - Jeff Boals, retaining Dustin as top assistant.  I like Dustin but don't think he is quite ready.  But whoever our head coach is may get a major offer after just 1 or 2 years if our success continues, so Dustin would be there ready for the next hire with more experience under his belt.
2 - Bacari Alexander...Always liked the guy, and I think he always liked us.  I think he is ready.
3 - Dustin Ford.  Wouldn't hate it.  Continuity is definitely important...Just think it is a tad early for him.  Maybe I just think that because he played when I was a student and I don't want to face the facts of getting old enough for stuff like that to happen.

Add to that Holtman and maybe even Rhodes and Kuwik and I think we have a lot of great options of people with ties/experience to the program.  Count me against the random seasoned veteran candidates.  I know Frank has worked out beautifully but I just don't see it working in this particular situation.

Really the only reason it could ever be someone other than Boals would be continuity, meaning Dustin.  I have trouble seeing the rationale for any other hire personally.

I said this guy in a earlier thread, but borncat pooped on the idea.

Doug Wojcik, former coach at Tulsa, from wet/wild/wonderful West Virginia.

If throwing out some years off a resume:  John Pelphrey may be worth a look.

Have been very impressed with him both times his teams were in the Convo. Seems to stress toughness and defense...sound familiar?

If you look at the track record of Schaus, I would almost guarantee that neither Boals nor Ford will be the next coach. It will be an "outsider".
