Some names:
Looking at his current staff, David Richman is the front runner for the HC coach job, so he's probably out. The others are Will Ryan, Bo Ryan's son, and Freddy Coleman, a NDSU alum who TOS tried to recruit IIRC.

Also Jason Kemp at Toledo was on the NDSU staff for awhile.

My prediction is Will Ryan, Aaron Fuss, and one assistant with local ties to be named later.

Bo Ryan's son Will Ryan says he'll be following Saul Phillips to Ohio University.

Make it Will Ryan, Fuss, and Walt Offutt. I would be incredibly happy about that

I've heard the name Fuss a lot, but can someone explain the importance of him to our program and how he can survive all these coaching changes?

How about Jeff Boals - 'cause that's the only way he is going to be on the Ohio bench

Sorry, just felt like stirring the pot

Dustin Ford on the bench for 250k as an associate HC. Helps Saul out with the weakness in local recruiting.

Sonny has been recruiting the Cleveland area for his high school team, so wouldn't be a big change.

This post article talks about our previous assistants.

I agree that Fuss would be a good guy to keep around. Been around since Groce and he is an Ohio guy so he knows local recruiting a bit. He started as basketball ops for us and got promoted to assistant when Christian came. He graduated from OSU.

I would assume Phillips brings some guys and also tries to hire someone with Ohio recruiting ties. Phillips is a Midwest guy but not really this part of the Midwest was far as recruiting goes..

Fuss, I think is a native of Pataskala, but is a pretty smart dude. He has a knack of looking at schedules and teams and what they are returning. He is the mastermind of finding teams that are going to be tops of their conference but are beatable and getting them scheduled ( think Mercer).

He is a quick study and is working his way through the ranks up to becoming an assistant coach. I caught up to him in the office the second week Christian was here showing Coach Video breakdowns of all personnel and bringing Coach up to speed on the athletes we had in the stable at the time. He is really quite organized and fits the JG attention to detail mold.

I hope he stays ....he is a calming influence and would indeed benefit from new ideas. I am not sure how much recruiting he is responsible for so I am not sure how he shakes out with the incoming recruiting classes.

FWIW, Christian may not be taking any of his Ohio staff with him.  This article says he's been authorized to seek out the "best people" he can.

I read reports about Mike Jarvis and some other NE notables looking at sitting second chair. Maybe they are anticipating having someone with strong D1 background waiting in the wings in case of JC bolting for  a better job.

Just curious about this as I truly do not know

-can GT break down film?
-can GT recruit? Can he go into a home and go on the road and do the coaches/handlers/families and recruits?
-Can GT teach individual workouts? Get results with drills/skills?
-Can GTwork under a HC? Can he and will he be happy doing the grunt work it takes to be a good asst?
-Can GT work Ohio and does he have ties to the local coaching community?

Agree ^^^^^

If I'm Coach Philips, I'm not sure this is the time to break in a new coach - even if his jersey hangs from the rafters.  Get settled in.  Get the program headed in the direction you want.   Get the program on stable ground and in a few years....maybe.

And while Gary Trent is a big name to Ohio fans, how much would he mean to an 18-year-old kid thinking about playing basketball at Ohio? How many high school kids have ever even heard of him? He was drafted before they were born and his NBA career was almost over before they started elementary school. But if he can offer good qualities as a basketball coach, then bring him aboard.

I'm 20 and I knew who he was when I was like 10

I would guess that's pretty rare, though, and will get increasingly rarer as time goes by. He was a good NBA player but not an All-star so I'd think the only people who are going to know about him are people who actually saw him play.

Lots of 18 year old aau types know Gary Trent. Gary Trent Jr.

But hey we know Saul can recruit Minnesota, and Trent lives where again?

I don't think you can entirely rule Trent on staff out, but it's a long shot. I wouldn't be too surprised if Saul and/or Ryan didn't already have connections to the Trents though the Minnesota aau people.

And would Trent even want to come and enroll jr at Athens? Him and Watson would be dominant.

On the one hand Ric Johnson didn't know who Gary Trent was and he's wearing Trent's jersey #, on the other hand 13K packed the Convo to watch his jersey go up in the raftors. I have no clue if Gary Trent is qualified to be an assistant or not, I just recall him expressing interest in wanting to be one when JC was hired.

I admittedly am not qualified to determine who is and who isn't qualified to be an assistant but I think Trent's bio and life experience would potentially make for an interesting addition to a staff- he's arguably the greatest player in program history and conference history, he was a first round NBA draft pick, he overcame a terrible childhood to live out his hoop dreams, and he did it at Ohio University. That, along with his work as a counselor dealing with at risk youths makes me think that he has capability to effectively communicate to young people in a way that can be compelling.

Again, I don't know if he's actually qualified for all of the duties required, but I think he's an alum that would be worth a look.
