Seems like I read something before the conference tourneys about Cuonzo being on a bit of a hot seat.  He went on a hot streak with Tennessee and now he's at Cal.  Interesting turn of events!

Jumped on their board, and saw someone listed Dambrot as someone they should take a look at... Although he listed "Saul Phillips from NDSU" as a possibility in the same thread.

I could see either Dambrot or TOS just loving it in Knoxville!

Forde weighs in on TN dysfunction.....just pisses me off more that we could not beat those *^%#s in Providence. ....or Knoxville for that matter.

Zo is headed to Cal. Great move but I will miss seeing his teams develope. Not sure who is going into that situation but Pearl will enjoy beating them twice a year for a while.

I'm sure our staff will be watching who they hire. May open up a recruit for us.

Was reading about this on twitter, and one of the first few things I read was a fan calling to buy out Phillips contract (already) and move Saul to Knoxville :)

like it or not,.....those orange b..strds are one of the ones that could easily open the pursestrings and pay up on the buyout.

I would think guys like Jeff Capel or similar are better fits for that program.

As a Vols fan myself I think a lot of the tension/frustration with hoops lately is partially the result of the mess the football program has become since the end of the Fulmer era.  While the teams were not achieving at the level we all would have liked under Phil, they certainly did better than they have since he left.  (Men's) Basketball has always been strong in Knoxville, but nothing like football.  Counzo was, in my opinion, a bit of a scapegoat for a fan base that was tired of cheering for an underachieving men's athletic program (our Lady Vols are not the power they once were in hoops either but that's a different story).

As exciting as it was to beat South Carolina in football this year, a part of me was reminded of how beating South Carolina was a minimum requirement once upon a time (with Kentucky, Vandy etc.).  Granted Cocks have improved by lightyears under Spurrier but still should not be a field rushing victory.

One of the best things that could happen to the new hoops coach would be for Butch and the football team to have a great year, beating a big name SEC school and going to a bowl game.  Otherwise the new hoops coach could get an imbalanced amount of pressure.

Just my $.02.

Pretty good .02

Any truth to the rumours that boosters took away Zo's access to the jets they provided for recruiting and team transportation that most Power conferences have access to and use extensively to get to far away recruits on a compressed schedule? That and similar cancelled perks effectively showed him the end was near it seems. Is that how you are hearing it?

I agree with you in all that I have read that the fanbase is smarting from the loss of Summit, Fulmer and Pearl.

Unfortunately I am not in the know enough to shed any light on the resources being slashes for Zo.  There are as many fickle fans in TN as with any program.  If it's dependent on someones preferences, then chances are you won't get it if they don't like you.

While I never had any issues with Counzo beyond my standards for any coach (run a clean, respectable program that represents the school well, drive players to get an education (and hey, maybe actually graduate?), and win more than you lose, with a few championships sprinkled in), it may behoove the AD to hire someone who seems to fit the cultural mold of the average Big Orange fan.  Someone with a drawl in his voice, ideally with southern roots.  Fulmer, Majors, Summitt etc. were all popular because they were native sons/daughter.  While I was not happy at all with Pearl's actions, he does have the kind of personality and charisma that most fans like.

The loss of Summit = definitely
The loss of Pearl = mixed
The loss of Fulmer = still celebrated by the most vocal fans, but a silent mass supports him completely, and think he got the raw end of a crappy deal.

Mostly agree with you, but differ on this point. Tennessee fans want a winner, and will overlook nearly ANYTHING else to get it. Pearl was most certainly NOT a native. I know you didn't say he was, but he didn't even come close to fitting that mold--no "drawl," no southern heritage, not even Baptist (yikes!), or Christian! Despite that, he was nearly universally loved by the Big Orange faithful.

Same with Lane Kiffin. Didn't fit any of that good-ol-boy, southern cookin' kind of guy, yet when he first took the job, the vast majority of UT fans LOVED him. When he did something brash, they made excuses for him. Until he ditched them. Now they hate him.

Similar point but from the opposite perspective, Derek Dooley DID fit the prototype you describe--southern roots, SEC coaching heritage, strong "drawl," but UT fans didn't like him because he didn't win, couldn't wait for him to be fired.

Right now, they LOVE Butch Jones. He's showing signs of winning. And he's from Michigan! A Yankee! All that will be forgiven so long as he wins. And if he can beat Florida, he's golden for at least two more seasons.

Bottom line: UT fans don't care who you are, or what you stand for. But you damn well better win.

You seem very rational and level headed vol fan  - except  for your expectations this year in football.  Opening with two tough mid-majors who both went bowling (probably a split) followed by a trip to Oklahoma and then Georgia and Florida back to back.  With an all new "O" line.  And a defense that butch already complains lacks depth and experience (gave up NINE td's in the spring game!)  They need to be concentrating on the season not turning into a total disaster more than bowl talk.  A bowl is not in the cards.  As far as hoops, they lost the 7-1 center prospect to Cal and the guard out of Louisiana might bolt as well.  Can you blame Martin for leaving them in the lurch?  36,000 people endorsed a petition to run him out of town because they wanted a convicted cheater/liar back? This a case of "what goes around comes around" - running off Majors who was very successful and then running off Fulmer who was very successful and in hoops running off Jerry Green who was very successful -  now they are headed into a fifth straight losing season in football and with Stokes leaving early and prospects bailing, could be headed for a tough rebuilding in basketball.

Now, the good news for vol fans is every Walmart in the state of Tennessee will mark your team's merchandise down to buy-one/get-two-free. (next to all the unsold leftover Chris Johnson Titans jerseys)

Jeff Capel was the coach that actually got the ball rolling at VCU as Anthony Grant built upon the base Capel built and Smart has done the same.  Capel going to Oklahoma a "Great Plains Football School" reminded me of Danny Nee going to Nebraska.

Fake OU has a lot more historical success than Nebraska.

Seems to be a decent hire.  Wasn't overwhelmed nor appalled.  I hope Vol nation has a little patience with him as, on paper, the cupboard looks a little bare for next year.  His success at schools that are not perennial contenders hopefully will bode well for him now that he is at a major school with larger re$ources.

As I mentioned earlier one of the best things that could happen for him is for football to have a halfway decent, non-losing season, although that may be a tall order.
