Heard through the grapevine that Danny Nee is done at the Merchant Marine Academy. He was suspended for an incident in January and recently resigned. Here is a thread from Service Academy Forums:

Boy, I'm said to see this happen.  I've often wondered what Ohio's basketball history would have been like if Danny had chosen to stay and hadn't taken the Nebraska job.  I've also wondered what Danny's personal history would have been like.  He'd probably not have as much money in the bank, but he might also have had a more satisfying career.  He had Ohio, it appeared, on the verge of being the dominant team in the MAC and, perhaps, a top 25 team.  What if he had taken the path less traveled by?

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."

Without divulging sources, I can tell you that Nee once wondered the same thing. This was during his Pittsburgh days so I am sure the thought has crept in since then. That said. At the time he was sure it was the right thing

Gotta agree here.  At the time, Nebraska was about as low as a Big8 program could be.  Ohio, at the time, was a much better situation.  And, that staff with Hahn and Frachilla was recruiting well and coaching guys up.  So true, what might have been!

And, he did cash in at NeeBraska and got them to at least respectable during his tenure.

My memory is that several people said Nee was going through a divorce at the time he left Ohio so future income had become priority which would mean he would have to move to a larger school.

Nee's last game for Ohio was against Ohio State who had announced Eldon Miller was leaving at the end of the season.  I had always wondered how things might have been different had Ohio State hired Nee instead of Williams who left after his second year.  Nee was a good recruiter in Philadelphia and New York and being at Ohio State would have been an easier sell than Nebraska.

I found a story that talks about the end of Nee's career at Nebraska.

Their Are No FORMER BOBCATS------ JUST LOYAL BOBCATS

WHEN THE BATTLE WAS ALOMOST OVER I GOT IN TOUCH WITH MANY BASKETBALL PLAYERS FROM THE

DANNY NEE DAYS IN ATHENS. ALL OF US WROTE LETTERS OF PRAISE FOR DANNY TO THE COMMANDER

AT THE MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY. I WAS ASTOUNDED BY THE NUMBER OF LOYAL BOBCATS-- SEE

ABOVE-- THAT WROTE LETTERS.

THE POST OFFICE IN NYC HAD A BUSY WEEK WITH ALL THE MAIL

DANNY RESIGNED ON HIS OWN RATHER THEN FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT-- PERHAPS AGE DOES THAT

TO ALL OF US.

HIS FORMER ASS"T  COACH THERE WAS HERE IN OHIO FOR AS COUPLE OF YEARS-- THE KNIFE THAT

HE CARRIED HERE AND IN NEW YORK WAS LONG AND HAD BLOOD ON IT. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT HE

DOES NOT GET THE HEAD JOB AND IS NOW ON THE STREETS OF NYC.

DANNY HAS BEEN A HUGE FACTOR IN THE LIVES OF MANY BOBCATS--

I never heard about any divorce. Danny arrived at Nebraska married to Janet, and left the same way, so far as I know.

Danny did an excellent job of recruiting at Nebraska. Prior to Danny, Nebraska never had any player in the NBA, so far as I know, though they did have one on the Harlem Globetrotters. He placed several in the NBA, probably 5 or 6. His time at Nebraska was filled with highs and lows. Your article details the low point, but some years earlier he was successful enough and popular enough that "Danny Nee Ties" were all the rage.

His successors were much less successful than he was, at least until the current coach. I think that most of the issues with Nebraska fans were related to a similar trait to TOS: He always let it be known that he would rather be coaching back east.

Well, when I lived in Missouri for a year in the late '70s I was told that I was "from back East" when I said I was from Ohio.  So, I guess Danny should have stayed put!
