Christian had the shortest tenure since Russell Finsterwald, 1920-1922. I'll be happy with 4-6 years from Phillips with a promotion to a power conference if it means we win a lot of games and make it to the dance again a time or two.

This appears to be a great hire. Up and coming coach who has had success at a program with poor facilities and a tough recruiting sell, and who comes from a great coaching tree. Looks an awful lot like an upgrade from where I'm sitting. Not to mention, the quick, assertive manner that Schaus handled the search can't be overlooked. We are a program that gets to decide who we want, rather than wading through candidates until we find one who wants us.

I'll ask: Anybody still feel like the sky is falling or that the Ohio brand has been damaged?

Oh, and I should add that within 10 minutes of being hired Saul showed up on Saturday Night Live. Has to be the first time an Ohio coach has been on SNL.

Saul Phillips says Ohio called him at 4 pm Saturday and wanted to interview him at 6 pm. Deal was done over the next few hours.

I think this is why you hire a search firm. Both sides knew there was mutual interest before the first call was made.

Hopefully he can upgrade our OOC schedule in the future, because the list of cupcakes that North Dakota St. played the past few years just ain't gonna cut it if we want any chance at an automatic bid. You're in the MAC now, time to step your game up Saul!

Don't you mean an at-large bid? Aren't we jumping the gun here just a bit? He's not even officially introduced and we're looking at his OOC schedule? C'mon.

"Blessing in disguise" was an understatement by Treg.  I'm in a glass case of emotions these past few days!  Welcome to Athens, Saul!  Can't wait for the 2014-15 season!  If I'm a BC fan, I'd have a sinking feeling right now.

Great hire!  Perfect fit for the Bobcat Universe.  Has stayed and seen success through at North Dakota State.  Total package.

He connects well with players and should be a strong recruiter.  l wonder who will be on his staff...will need to plug into Ohio and region's recruiting pipeline quickly.  Saul should be great at developing relationships.

Impressive work by Schaus, who's an excellent AD.

In Schaus and Saul We Trust!

Okay right, worrying about whether the coach has his twitter account setup is so much more important than considering future scheduling possibilities.  Maybe I should go like him on facebook or something since some on this board are so infatuated with social media instead of what really counts.

Not sure what you consider "cupcake", but besides playing WMU, Notre Dame and Oklahoma, this year they also played among others San Diego State, Southern Mississippi, Rider, Saint Mary's (Calif.), Santa Clara, Towson State and Ohio State all OOC. Bison Arena seats 5,830 and the Summit had 4 of its 8 members in post season men's basketball tournament play, or exactly 50% of the league played after the regular season was over. Obviously that is more than what the MAC can brag about.

Sorry but Oklahoma and San Diego State were not on their schedule this year. They did have a few good games scheduled, but my point is just that this is going to be a big step from North Dakota St. and I hope he adjusts his scheduling accordingly to take us to the next level.  I do like the hire a lot, but for the kind of money he's going to be making I just want to see us start to make the next big push like the Creighton's and Wichita State's of the world.

That must be why NDSU was a 12 seed that won a game in the Tourney while the MAC championship team that whipped Ohio like a mule twice this year was a 14 seed than got destroyed.

Not to mention that same NDSU team beat Western Michigan @ WMU this season.

No, you are correct.  They are both senseless discussions at this point in time.

By the way, this past season SOS: ND State 117.   Ohio 124

When someone asked Phillips what a victory over the Sooners would mean for the basketball program at North Dakota State and the entire university, Phillips said, “It means we get to play together again, honestly.”

Congrats on getting a fun and energetic coach.  I was not a basketball fan at all, but watching him on/off the court caught my interest in Basketball.  I guarentee you are all going to love his passion.  He is a guy that loves what he does and is passionate about it.  He is also a great person in the community and really looks after his team, school, and community.   Congrats once again.. and enjoy the ride!

This is also a coach that beat a very good Norte Dame team at the time (before all their injuries), beat Delaware (another tourney team), we lost to Southern Miss by a point.

Absolutely GREAT hire!

Why on Earth would you care about tempo when the efficiency is as good as it was?

Thank you, Matty. We know how much being in this situation sucks. I wish you well on your next coaching search and continued success.

Thank you Matty for the input.  Any chance that Associate Head Coach David Richman in named Head Coach to provide your team continuity?  Good Luck!

Just listened to a live interview with coach Phillips with a station out of Minneapolis. I think I have a man crush. Some things he said:

"With my buyout clause I ain't leaving Athens for a long time". This says more about where Jim Schaus is taking this program more so than he will be here for 5 years. He did follow that up by saying he expects to see his daugher graduate from high school in Athens.

He also confirmed Will Ryan will follow him to Athens.

Said after 10 min talking to Jim S he was completely sold on the job.

Apparently his friends will like visiting him in Athens. He compared his hotel room condition to a frat party.

I think overall, his laid back, outgoing personality sold me on him. Probably more engaging and fun than Groce.
