We've had a lot of discussions about players having their scholarships yanked. Maryland just announced that they are guaranteeing all their scholarships in all sports. Would love to see this become the norm.

I'm sure guys like Urban Meyer and Nick Saban wouldn't like it. They routinely run guys off who don't cut the mustard. Not to mention when a new coach comes in and does the same thing to get his guys in place.

In my day there was an unwritten rule that if you kept your nose clean and went to class, they kept you around, even if you had a career ending injury or didn't pan out.

It's not a kids fault if they made a mistake on talent.

Agreed, I think this would be a positive step. Keep out of trouble and keep up in the classroom, and put in effort on the field/court, you should have a spot. My academic scholarships had clearly-defined requirements you had to hit in terms of GPA and such, and if you did they were essentially automatic renewal - no reason athletes shouldn't have the same peace of mind, especially those who in all likelihood are not going pro, and will need that education.
