In an article discussing if Harvard is the best mid major.

"Who’s better? Maybe Belmont? Stephen F. Austin? Wofford? Ohio? Maybe, but the argument isn’t the point. The simple fact that Harvard is very much in that discussion is, and I was curious: did Amaker actually think that was possible at Harvard?"

The article seems to be saying that the teams that used to be called the best mid-majors have moved up to high majors leaving us in the company of the teams mentioned. I would call this faint praise, but better than nothing.

Well, Amaker is not exactly doing it in the traditional "Harvard Way". There has been some noise from faculty and alums that he was getting kids through the cracks just to win games. A familiar theme.

I agree with you on mid-majors "moving up."

Just 5-10 years ago, programs like Xavier, Butler, VCU, Creighton and Gonzaga were "just" "mid-majors" but I don't think you can classify any of them like that any more.

He may not have given us a huge compliment here, but I think this comment goes with my thinking that we are in the next group of programs making the jump from "mid-major" to whatever the you want to call the tweener programs I mentioned above.

We are REALLY close. With NCAA tournament WINS in 2010 and 2012 and a great stadium/atmosphere ("high-major") as well as the spending to compete, I think we just need a couple more years where we make the NCAA tournament and make noise.

With Saul, I completely believe we are going to continue down this road.

It is an exciting time to be a Bobcat.

Interesting, and a nice mention.

Curious side note: what are the odds you are the Mike Drake who played Senior League baseball from Trimble that I played against?

Until Athens becomes a major media market and the MAC a top 6 conference, we've pretty much hit a ceiling...not a bad thing getting to the NCAA and winning some games. But look how hard it is for Butler to sustain the success they've had.

It is an exciting time to be a Bobcat.

It always feels good to get mentioned in the same breath as Wofford 'cause that's how you know we've made it. Look at me Ma, I'm big time!

We aren't Athens University, we are Ohio University. Ohio is a major media market. #brokenrecord

All programs without division I football...... As long as we play division I football we are stuck with the mid-major label for hoops. Football is king and the big 5 ain't letting us in.

I like that he decided to mention us and not Akron. NCAA Tourney results are more impressive than conference titles it appears.

Also, Belmont is in the Convo this year. Big game. Unfortunately, I will be out of town. Ack....

I agree, we aren't getting into the P5.

I see a much more realistic opportunity. Our goal should be to go to a conference where we play UConn, Cincinnati and Memphis twice a year in hoops.

If that happens, people can label us whatever they want. I'll be more than content at that point.

Let's add to that: There are 340-ish (?) D1 basketball teams. Sustaining success like Butler had over a few years is very tough.

As for major media markets, being in one doesn't guarantee any measure of sustained success and continued exposure. Winning is what does that. Just ask the Depaul or Northwestern basketball programs.

Spot on. We have made a fairly recent commitment to building a top notch basketball program and must maintain that commitment. With reasonable hires we should be able to become a destination program. I think we are already seeing a bit of that already. Think about the first year recruiting classes for TOS and John Groce and compare them to what we have coming in this year.
