Ohio will be a different team this year, from players to coaches. Thought it might be fun to take a wild guess, before the season starts, at the playing time for our players. So here’s my stab, based on heresay and watching less than 30 minutes of practice. I’d like to hear from others, particularly those with more insights. I’m going with 10 players.

Total 200 minutes Average time per player:

Ndour- 34

Willis- 30

S. Taylor- 26

R. Taylor- 24

Campbell- 24

Setty- 23

Laster- 23

Mompremier- 6

Thomas- 5

Harley- 5 (my big Q mark?)

Kominski - X (it will be a ton or none )

I think Setty and Campbell will both be closer to 26-28. Pretty small ball line up without them.

I like this exercise, especially when you hear people talking about how great everyone is going to be and how much they will contribute...Makes you prove it with math. Assuming no significant injuries...

Ndour - 30
Taylor - 30
Willis - 27
Campbell - 25
R Taylor - 20
Laster - 20
Setty - 20
Mompremier - 17
Harley - 7
Thomas - 2
Walk Ons - 2

The biggest reason I have Mompremier higher is chronic foul trouble from Setty, and to a lesser extent Ndour & Campbell. Based on SP's comments about Thomas early on, I get the impression they have a mutual understanding that he is providing depth and won't see the floor much. I agree that Harley could be anywhere from 2 to 25, I really have no idea.

I went to ESPN and looked at NDSU's stats from Saul's time to try to get a feel for how deep he likes to go on the bench. Obviously, hard to draw definite conclusions without knowing the roster situation there each year...

With that said, here are some general things I looked for from his time as head coach there.

Players who played in 50% of their games
13-14: 9
12-13: 11
11-12: 11
10-11: 10
09-10: 9
08-09: 10
07-08: 10

Leading MPG on team
13-14: 34.4
12-13: 34.2
11-12: 34.3
10-11: 32.2
09-10: 35.6
08-09: 34.5
07-08: 36.6

Players Averaging over 25 mpg-20 mpg
13-14: 5-5
12-13: 5-5
11-12: 3-6
10-11: 2-6
09-10: 3-6
08-09: 4-5
07-08: 3-5

Last year's NDSU had 8 guys play at least 10 mpg in 30+ games.

I like Setty to play big minutes because I think he is versatile enough to play either the 3 or the 4 for us.

Concerned about injuries/wear and tear/conditioning.

Throw it all out the window if Kaminski can play. That would create interesting rotation options on a number of levels.

Come MAC time you need to know who the top 8 are and hopefully you don't go much lower than that unless the score gets out of hand or you are in big foul trouble.I think we all know the first 5...question is the next 3 real contributors.

I seriously doubt Ndour plays more than 31 or 32 minutes this year. In the last 10 years we've only had one forward average more than Maurice did last year (30) and that was Jerome Tillman. It doesn't matter how important they are to the team. They have to work their arses off on every possession and are more likely to get in foul trouble.

As usual, I agree with Van. It's an exceptional guy who can go 34 hard minutes. If Mo hits 30 per game, that's a lot.

Also, hopefully we get some comfortable wins in which his minutes are relatively low. Averaging 34 per game would mean some games at 36-38 minutes--too much.

Monroe, I do think Mo's exceptional when it comes to playing long and hard. There are players, even big ones like Mo, who can run the court continually. He did it last year for Ohio and this summer for Senegal. That’s one reason it will be so tough for teams to match up against him this year. 34 minutes a game for players like him does happen in the college game. In the NBA where they play 3x more games, there are 40 players who average 34 min. per game or more. Ten of them average 38+ (LeBron checks in at 42.5). NBA players are human too. How many minutes Mo plays will depend on his physical condition as well as other factors like the score, fouls, the other players, etc. I agree it's better if we don't need him that much but he can go a long time if Saul chooses that route.

Mo was almost averaging 34 last year until his back problems kicked in during the late portion of MAC play.

I really think Wadly developing early to give us another solid big would be HUGE for this team, just to give us the ability to spell Mo early in the year keeping him from wearing down too much.

stub--Maybe, but I suspect that some of Mo's later injuries came from his long minutes.

The more stress on the young body, I gotta think the more susceptible to injury.

Plus, not having to play Mo the long minutes would mean 1) other guys are playing well and 2) we're putting games away somewhat early. Both of which good, of course.

Are we going to have the luxury of only playing Stevie 30 minutes a game? I'm thinking more like 34.

I agree. If he is physically capable, I could see him going 34.

In the article about the scrimmage Saturday, Saul again stated his plan is to have Stevie and Bean together on the floor as much as possible. He added that to keep a ball-handler out there at all times and to spell those guys, we would likely see Ryan Taylor rotate in as our 3rd ball-handler.

I like the thought of RT being tried out at PG if only to give us the option for a little size since the rest of the time we are going to have Stevie and Bean out there together.

Stevie and Bean are both under 6 feet, but they are both quick and have very active hands. Hopefully they can force a lot of turnovers before other teams can even setup their halfcourt offense.

Trying Ryan at point guard may clear up some future role questions. You could keep Dartis at the 2 as has been previously mentioned and we may now prefer to use the last scholarship on a big like Isaiah Maurice.

I'm salivating at the thought of a guard/wing rotation of Simmons, Taylor, Laster, Dartis, Harley and Block as juniors and seniors.

This exercise always has me questioning if we are going for average minutes per game or minutes in an average game. I think there will be enough cases where guys get in foul trouble, get a minor injury or there is a blowout that no one will average more than maybe 32 minutes per game. But in a regular game with none of those outside factors, I think a guy like Ndour or Stevie Taylor will play 35 or more.

I take it as average minutes per game over the season, and assuming no significant injuries. That's why I didn't give anyone more than 30, with foul trouble, blowouts, etc.
