there are some good AAU coaches, but there are too many that aren't.  I had a good laugh when I got deep into this piece, I saw the quote from holier-than-thou Coach K saying, basically, he had no idea that this dude was not on the straight and narrow.  At least a few coaches knew...

Well he did provide Coach K with a pretty solid player in Nolan Smith, who happened to be his step son. I thought that was kind of a bizarre tidbit.

He's a slimeball and has always been a slimeball.  At the time of his arrest Malone was facing assault charges for ambushing another AAU coach with two of his thugs and beating the crap out of him.  Apparently Malone had poached Joe Hampton (2016 to Penn State)  from this other coach's AAU team, one he had played on for a few years.  The coach passed him on the court earlier in the day and told him he thought it was a bush move so Malone went and got his buddies and waited in the hallway outside the gym and then jumped him after the game.  As the article mentions, Gary Williams refused to deal with him and caught a lot of flack because of it.  Unfortunately Malone's influence around here was such that it really hurt the program.

Incredible. I understand the importance of the AAU circuit and the way it provides more opportunities for playing and recruiting, but stories like this make me wonder how many other slimeballs are out there poaching and pimping these kids.

Now there is the correct use of "thug."

I remember watching the 2007 class of DC Assult over on the next court at Real Deal on the Hill in Fayetteville. I remember thinking what a bad organization this was just based on how the kids and coaches acted and carried themselves. The more I listened to folks talk about them  I was sure my first impressions were right.

By and large most AAU coaches are good guys. There are these guys who are slimy and in for other reasons. They are easy to spot and over the course of a summer they stick out pretty easily. It has always been interesting to me that many of the mid major coaches avoid them while high major guys seem more than willing to dance with the devil to get a kid. It seems like the mids know the baggage that comes with the package.

Been around the summer ball for a long time and constantly have to dispell the myths and rumours that these bad eggs propogate by tainting the majority of coaches who are doing the right thing.

Figured I'd plop this into this thread about AAU instead of starting a whole new one. The AAU has decided to stop allowing grade/age exceptions. Up until this each team was allowed to have up to three players who had re-classed (3rd grade playing against 2nd graders...6th grader against 5th graders, etc.)

This is my son's 5th season of AAU ball and I'm a big fan of this decision. I understand the reasoning behind allowing exceptions but for the most part the kids that needed the exceptions weren't the ones using it. Especially at the younger ages (my son is class of 2022) there is a huge difference in strength and body control. We chose to go the opposite direction with my son and had him playing up (he played 3rd grade when he was in 1st and 2nd grades) and found it was a huge benefit. That's also not necessarily a great route for all kids either but I really don't see the benefit of having a kid that is better than most of the players his age play against kids that are a year younger.
