So there's quite the debate going about the merits of ESPN3 regarding the MAC TV deal. With that, I ask...is ESPN3 "national TV"?

On a side note, do you see value in being on it? Curious what the thoughts are out there. Clearly the MAC is "all in" on ESPN3 being the future.

There's absolute value in being on it. My frustration stems for not working with STO or another channel anymore. This isn't a "tv Package" if much of it requires a streaming feed.

Yes, but not in the same way as ESPN's TV network. 3 provides a nationally available, quality stream. The difference being it doesn't capture much (if any) casual viewers. Whilst ESPN TV network plays in virtually all bars/restaurants across the U.S.

ESPN3 is "national" but I wouldn't completely call it "TV."

Video as we know it is changing. ESPN 3 is likely a HUGE part of the future of live sports. Today, the value is limited and it certainly does not compare to the value of being on ESPN or ESPN2 but there is some value and it is growing in value every day.

The game changer for ESPN3 will come when they let you subscribe without a cable plan. That day is coming. Might not be for another year, but it will happen eventually.

Sidebar, if anyone didn't realize many sports bars have access to ESPN3 now. Asking them to turn on a Bobcats game on ESPN3 game hasn't been an issue for me.

a year ago I would have said forcefully that ESPN3 was not TV. Today I say it, but more passively. Next year I'll probably say it is TV. Truth is we're in a transitional period regarding how TV is broadcast and how it is watched.

Being on ESPN3 allows the Mothership to be able to run our highlights easily, and put our plays on the Top 10 plays highlights.

Actually, it's worldwide TV/video. Practically anyone in the world who has an internet connection of some kind can watch it.

Yes.
Really? My recollection is anytime I try to watch something on ESPN3 the system asks me for my cable provider, DirecTV isn't an option, and I'm out of luck and can't watch the MAC games.

Yeah, really - for the most part.

ESPN3 is based on deals with your ISP, not television provider (obviously these are frequently one and the same).

For example, I do not have cable TV that includes ESPN, but I do have internet through Comcast -- I would have access to ESPN3 that way.

There is one major ISP, however, who ties ESPN3 access to having BOTH their internet and television service: Time Warner Cable.

I have never heard anyone in Southern California say a good word about Time Warner. It's as if they specifically want to give bad service. I can tell stories...

I've had the same experience with Comcast. Everyone here in CT complains about them much as folks did with Time Warner in Ohio. I've had no issues, tremendous internet speed, and one noticeable outage in three years (and my power had been out for 9 days as a result of a blizzard, so I can't really fault Comcast).

Up in Michigan our cable TV is provided by Charter. They carry ESPN3 and I have used it a lot to view football and basketball games. ESPN has done a lot to upgrade video quality and it is currently top notch in my book. I use Chrome as one of my web browsers and recently purchased and installed Chromecast on one of my big screen TVs. Now I can stream the video on ESPN3 from my tablet or my computer to my TV and watch MAC games in high definition on a big screen. I agree television broadcasting of sporting events is changing. Where it will end up in another ten years is not clear except for the fact that we will have more high quality options for viewing sporting events at all levels including high school. The old days of ABC, NBC or CBS controlling things are disappearing.
