I wonder if he was sober at the time he made his comments?

Marshall and WVU fans spend a lot of time on each others message boards talking smack. The sign of a great rivalry.

On one hand, I love this response. The fine folks at Marshall have some confusing belief that they're an upper half of the country type of program, which is laughable. They aren't even in the upper tier of their OWN CONFERENCE.

On another hand, I hate that he's right when it comes to RPI being a big deterrent for wanting to play Marshall. In state rivalries shouldn't be fueled by how high the RPI is over a couple years.

He is right. Dantoni should watch what he says if he wants to keep the series alive. He clearly doesn't have the power on his side of the table.
Huggins is kind of afraid, like any coach who plays a no win game like that. But they should play each other, just like OSU should play a few in-state teams every year instead of the likes of who they schedule. By my count there are eleven other division one schools in Ohio.

The problem with Ohio State scheduling one of the Ohio schools is the RPIs for most Ohio schools is way better than what Marshall's is. And Marshall has nowhere near the basketball history that Xavier, Cincinnati, Ohio, Dayton, Kent State, Miami, etc. have. The risk of a loss might be greater for Ohio State, but the hit to the RPI wont be as bad. I would love to see them do it, but they won't. Huggins' response is even more appropriate than what Thad Matta's might be.

The game between Marshall and WVU is usually very close with wvu winning the majority of the games. I believe they are 0-4 in Huntington and the series was then moved to the neutral site with the schools splitting the seats. I think what got Huggins so upset this year was MU had a lot of players leave with the coaching change. MU was playing with a couple of walkons and nearly beat Huggins.

The game has been controled by the WV state legislator and WVU has not been able to stop the series.

I wish this would happen in Ohio.

Thad has expressly said in interviews he won't play those games anywhere but at home. I'd personally love to see X, UD, UC play them at home all the time, because at some point they'll beat them, and help their RPI's.

The problem with the way the RPI is used in this case is that many schools seem too often to refuse to play road games against teams outside the top 100 or even 50.

It's a pipe dream, but I wish the selection committee would require a certain (4 or 5?) number of road/neutral games to qualify for an at-large bid. Look at OSU so far, and you'll notice they will play exactly TWO games away from home before the B1G schedule starts.

I think the funniest part about this is that Marshall's coach thought WVU should play them TWICE a year! Depending on the size of your conference, you MIGHT play every team in your OWN CONFERENCE twice a year, why on earth would you schedule a non-conference team twice in the same year?!?

Who in the hell would schedule an OOC home and home with Marshall (let alone anyone) in a season?

*Looks at Ohio 2006-07 schedule*

Oh.

Their only true road game (and only loss, Louisville) was mandated by the Big 10-ACC Challenge and the other one is a neutral site game against UNC in Chicago. They have the advantage in that one as well.

The last time I checked, state schools get money from the state. So if the states were so inclined, they could "persuade" state schools to schedule each other, much like the state of West Virginia does in this case.

It's a topic that really gets me wound up. I generally enjoy watching Thad's teams, and root for them if they're not playing teams I care about ahead of them. That said, his/their non-conference scheduling is a complete joke. I suppose this is for another thread though. I actually wanted to do the research to see if OUr non-conference schedule had a higher SOS/RPI if you exclude that Louisville game and our trip to Hawaii. My gut feeling says yes.

Article in today's dispatch hits on this topic. Doesn't look like Thad is going to change or apologize for such a weak schedule. Of course o$u's excuse is it needs the money from playing nearly all non-con games at home.

Schools like OSU won't do anything differently unless forced to by the state or NCAA. It now looks like the paying of the players has hit a snag with all the legal and tax ramifications. So the Big 6 won't be able to fully separate themselves from the likes of us. Who knows? maybe it will go the other way.

That was two years ago, I think. You also missed my sarcasm. How did A&M's season end last year?
