He's leaving to work for the NCAA, reportedly second in command behind Mark Emmert. I would think Shaus could a possible replacement...

Now he is in the same city as his kid. Sounds like a good move on his part.

Staying one step ahead of the hangman's noose? Has led WVU into a poor fitting conference membership in Big XII. Football hire has had mixed results.

I don't see it that way. They landed on their feet getting into the Big XII and he is a favored son there. He had also been looking to move to a bigger program recently. Now that his kid will be a long term star for the Colts, he'll be right there. Morgantown is not an easy place to fly from to follow your kid on the weekends. He has a law degree and he'll be running the NCAA or something similar one day in the future.

Interesting take. They are in a island way up here. But, are sure better off than Cincinnati and UConn.

If the Big XII adds Cincinnati and Uconn to get to 14, then it works out a bit better.

Asked if she or any other current staff member was under consideration, Gee answered:
“I think we are very blessed with our staff. We want someone who will build on the success we’ve had.”

It sounded, however, like they were looking outside the department. “There will be a lot of advisors,” Gee said, but added there would not be a search committee as such. “In this kind of a search, a committee search is not in the best interests. The kind of person we want is very happy where they are.” Within the department the candidates would most likely be Cunningham; Teri Howes, senior associate athletic director, sports administration, SWA; Matt Borman, senior associate athletic director, executive director.

Among the names mentioned when Luck was hired were former MAC director Whit Babcock, who went on to be athletic director at Cincinnati and now is in his first year at Virginia Tech; Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens; Ohio athletic director Jim Schaus; and Alabama deputy director of athletics Shane Lyons. Gee is no rookie when it comes to hiring athletic directors.

“I have been in the athletic director business for a long time,” the veteran university administrator said. “I have appointed a number and you know I eliminated the athletic director at Vanderbilt, so I’ve been on a number of sides of the equation.”

Many of you already know this, but Shane Lyons (currently at Alabama) is a Parkersburg, WV native; a Parkersburg High School graduate; a WVU graduate and his parents still reside in Parkersburg. I'd be shocked if he didn't put his name in the hat, but not sure if they want his name in there or not?

I forgot Gordon Gee was president of WVU.

I suspect there is absolutely no chance that ego hires a MAC A.D.

Almost forgot about that, he was very close to becoming the AD at Texas, until they chose the AD from Arizona State.

I'd forgotten that, too. That could make this entire process very, very entertaining.

An Ohio graduate who is AD at VMI told me this morning that he is hearing Jim Schaus is being considered.

Not happy at the news, but not surprised. But there is always hope that Gordon will screw it up! ;-)

I was pretty much assuming from the start Schaus was a leading candidate for the WVU job. Who else would they be heavily considering?

Schaus leaving would obviously be a big, big loss but at least he would leave Ohio in pretty decent shape. The Women's Volleyball and Basketball programs seem to have very good young coaches and Coach Phillips seems to have great potential. The IPF has finally been built.

That said, I sure hope he stays. He's a good man.
