Seemed like the Convo crowd helped. I think we match up well with Toledo (they'll let you score) so I'd like to somehow see them in the MAC tourney although that looks like an extreme longshot right now.

We gotta be tougher under the basket. Boothe, Garber, Weatherspoon et al won the pushing and shoving match under the basket tonight. Sure, they got away with a few non calls, bad calls, but the aggressor usually does.

Russ called out the students for leaving before the end - did many?

Yes they did.

A lot of season ticket seats empty from the start - a LOT. And above that side sparse.

Student side - Ozone and up to the mid upper level pretty good tonight - but pretty big early exodus.

I'm trying to decide if we should be excited about "effort" that for the most part should be the standard most games? I don't know...I didn't expect to see a "W" out of this, and I'm happy with being close at the end compared to last week's two games. At the same time, I look at the "effort" and wonder what that effort could have resulted in last week. Perhaps we'd be seeing a 2-1, or at worst 1-2 mark. Now the pressure to get Saul that first MAC 'W' keeps building with tough road game, after tough road game on the horizon.

Based on how the effort the last few games...we should be content. But only excited in the sense that this should be viewed as a stepping stone for the season to start improving.

Was pleased with the effort and a lot more enthusiasm amongst the squad than the past couple of games. Unfortunately, the effort can only get you so far. How many times did Toledo get a 50/50 ball? You could almost call it out. If there was a long rebound, it was almost guaranteed a Rocket possession and more points on the board. Gotta get tougher in the paint defensively and on the glass. Having Mo and Tony in foul trouble certainly didn't help.

Chandler Thomas? He's a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma. What gives?

I will add that Stevie probably had his best game of the year with 9pts, 5ast, 4reb and only 1 TO. That's what he needs to strive for every night. Be THAT guy for this team.

Agreed. I thought the refs weren't all there. They missed travels on both teams several times. Just missed calls everywhere. There were 2 fouls on Setty that there is no way they are fouls.

Thomas would have been a big boost to guard Weatherspoon (same size attributes) with the foul trouble.

I thought Stevie played awesome. His stat line was well, but he played much better defense (especially when he was on juice), and his drive penetration was key when we had guys standing around.

I also thought Harley played really well.

What happened to Laster? He was missing the last 7-8 minutes of the game.

I don't think it was just effort. For the most part, we just took better shots. It also helped that we were making them. Russ seemed to be complaining that we took too many 3's but I disagree. Only a couple of them were bad shots and we made our fair share. What it came down to was the offensive glass, fouls, and our inability to turn them over at all. Really the game stayed within reach, but we just couldn't get a critical stop down the stretch.

Great points on Thomas and Stevie. I really expected him to be able to provide a little off the bench this year.

The amount of butts in the seat going up behind the Ozone in the upper bowl was impressive, and confusing...especially considering most were there well before tip. But yeah, a lot of them exited early. Were those all students? If so, it was a huge turnout.

This game gets mixed reviews for me. I realize Toledo has the most potential of any team in the MAC, but it is kind of sad that Bobcat basketball is now at a point that I find myself (and many others find themselves) somewhat satisfied with an OK effort in a losing cause at home. But I do not call this game a "good effort."

There was good:

1. Felt like they could actually execute on offense. Shots are falling because they got good shots!

2. Five assists from Stevie, four assists from Bean! SAY WHAT!?!?!?

3. Only forced it from 3 like three/four times, an accomplishment for this team.

There was bad:

1. Why didn't the team huddle on the free time out after Setty fouled out? After he fouled out, why did Setty feel the need to complain about that third or fourth foul call that he indeed got screwed on? With two minutes to go in the game, is it more important to complain about a call from 15 minutes ago, or to encourage your team?

2. Am I the only one who thought Campbell or N'Dour needed to be in at all times, despite the foul trouble? Need to take a risk when you are a home underdog against probably the best team in the conference. Wadley/Harley is not going to cut it. And oh look - neither one fouled out.

3. Why does it feel like the Convo is not an intimidating place to play anymore? Why is the O-Zone so quiet? Why is there no passion except from 10 or so kids in the middle? Why don't they even chant the foul calls anymore? Why did they take off early? Why don't they wear their O-Zone t-shirts? Do they only come to games for the free Taco bell?

4. Why is Ryan Taylor so shy one game after scoring 16 points?

There was ugly:

1. Remember that easy layup Toledo got after an out-of-bounds play under Toledo's basket in the second half? Why do I feel like the middle school rec team I coach wouldn't have fallen for that?

2. Was I the only one in the Convo who realized that Ohio thought Toledo was in the double bonus after the eighth foul? On the ninth foul, Toledo pulled everyone back on defense. Was I the only one who was then not surprised when the Toledo shooter rebounded his own front end miss despite four Bobcats in the lane? Are we still calling this a good effort after this kind of boneheaded mistake from four guys in crunch time?

More thoughts:

1. Love the new Dale's BP Price Is Right game! Why didn't we get to hear, "The actual retail price is...!"??? Why isn't the over/under price $18.04?

2. Why are Hampton Inn and Pepsi OK with their logos being displayed on their sides on two of the scoreboards?

3. How long until the shot clock by Bobcats' bench malfunctions again?

I was happy with the effort last night also..Setty seemed to bring a huge spark to the team off the bench. Looks like guys are starting to settle in to their roles. There was one possession late in the game when we made a big turnover (I think we were down 6 or 8)...Both Bean and Stevie were in the game and they were the 9th and 10th guys down the court..No way that should happen...Bean also needs to start following his shot..

Overall, I was okay with the effort..I think there is still a decent chance to have a decent season.

I don't think I've seen it aywhere, but did anyone notice when Williams of Toledo was shooting a front end of a 1 and 1 with about 40 seconds to go. he missed it, our 4 players on the baseline stood there and did not move, and Williams went up and rebounded it while they all watched? Luckily he missed the put back and no harm was done but man talk about falling asleep at the wheel.

They offered free scarfs before the game along with DP dough so that might be a reason. But I honestly can't take any excitement in a game that we showed "great effort" The fact is we're 0-3 in the MAC. and 5-9 overall. When's the last time that has happened? It's unacceptable. I expect more of my bobcats even though it is a rebuilding year. I'm sure it will get better in the future. Saul is a good coach but again a refuse to be excited with "great effort"

EDIT: Adding on to that why is our team last in the MAC in free throw percentage. All that takes is practice. There is no reason we should be last in that category.

For some reason, it seems this team is playing mostly on emotion lately. They stay close or have a lead until midway or late in the 2nd half, and then a big run happens and they don't have anything in the tank to come back. Last night, Stevie hit the big 3 to go up 49-48 with 13 mins to go, but then Toledo went on a 14-3 run over the next five mins and the game was basically over. Played even for five mins then slowly pulled to within five but it was just too late. Against BG we were down by six with 14 mins to go and the lead went to 18 in six mins. Essentially played even the rest of the way. We haven't found the one or two guys who can consistently give the team a lift when things aren't going well.

So, fun fact, O Zone membership cards are now needed to sit in the first bleacher section before tipoff. So, the filling of the upper bowl might become a more common sight for students.

They aren't last in free throw percentage. They are in the bottom third, which is highlighted by the fact that they're worst at getting to the line.

Big mistake to let them sit that long. The longer you sit, the less you play (duh) vs. the possibility of playing a lot more without fouling out. Last year, Christian did the same thing with Mo against Ball, sits him for 12 minutes in 1st half with 2 fouls, and he finishes the game with 2 fouls. As an aside. I'll never forget the gutsy decision by Al McGuire to play Bo Ellis after committing 2 very early 1st half fouls in the national championship game against N.Carolina. Bo played most of the game with 4 fouls, never fouled out and played the entire game. Marquette won.

Mo and I forget who were looking and talking to each other across the paint when the free throw was shot, allowing the shooter to get his own board. Focus!

Effort?? A couple things, Andrew Ruck got it right when 4 cats had no idea it was 1 and 1 when the rocket shot the free throw. And we we are 1 - 8 when the opponent scores 70 or more points and ! - 9 including the loss to BG who had 69 points. There is an anomaly like DePaul, but we either need to use more time on the shot clock and take better shots or, if all else fails, play better helping defense. The game is not complicated.
