John Groce seems only able to beat Michigan as a Bobcat. The Illini loss to the Wolverines last night lowers JG's UofI record to 0-5 against Michigan.

Yep

they are really turning up the heat attacking everything from his lack of in game coaching to his poor recruiting. One fan is ready to start a coaching carousel thread.

A pic from their board is expressing their discontent. Bluebloods with no pedigree. They think they should be a Final Four team regularly...as does most of my peers who are Indiana fans.

This pic from the Illinois forums sums it up. http://coacheshotseat.com/iStock_000001596704Small.jpg

I am not sure what is going on but he is still dealing with Weber's kids and has had a great 3 non conf seasons. Made the tourney twice and NIT once in 3 years. I think he is doing a good job but, like Crean and Harbaugh, there are malcontents who want him gone. Not sure what they are going to replace him with but I assure you and them .....it will set the program back.

This doesn't appear to be one of Michigan's strongest units and as we all know it doesn't take much for the natives to become restless when losses occur. Would have been nice to see JG's team pull this one out. Unfortunately, "his" recruit Caris LeVert was Michigan's high scorer with 19pts.

WOW! It would beyond stupid for Illinois to jettison Groce as that guy is a winner. Like all coaches, he needs a little time but in today's society fans do not give coaches time. Unfortunately the grass isn't always greener and at a Big 10 school like Illinois, it's "win now or else" mode. Illinois needs to keep Groce and see this thing through.

I wonder if these same folks are among the crowd on here that assumed we should have been expecting the Elite Eight in 2013.

This illustrates why coaches really need to know the temperature of the fan base and program when jumping. Untouchable at Ohio. Hot seat at Illinois.

An approximate 1.2 million more a year can buy a hell of a pile of ice to cool a hot seat. JG HAD to take that job.

Not only is this exactly right, but there's no D1 job that comes with immunity from being fired.

I don't get it. Why should he face heat when you can go 10 years without a MACC (inclding the last 2.5 years being whatever) and most peoples remain confident that you are the coach.

I like him but he does not have the chops for the B1G.

That was a butt-ugly 2nd half against OSU whether you're a fan or foe. They completely fell apart and played some BAD bball. When you're forced to use all your Timeouts @ the 12 minute break you know it's not good.

When I tuned in the game UI was tied. They hit a three and were up by 3. Then the bottom fell out and the next thing I know they are down by about 15. One of the biggest collapses I've seen in awhile.

"score the ball"....
This phrase is tops on my personal pet peeve list of words used by fans and commentators. I'd love to know who came up with this phrase. What else would a player use to score in basketball besides the ball? It's implied and unnecessary. (rant over)

On topic, I was listening to the O$U vs Illinois game on the way home from UD Arena Saturday. I didn't see the game but the second half meltdown had to be huge.

Dribble the ball. Pass the ball. Score the ball. It fits for me.

apoplexy

I did not write that....it was contained in a quote. You had me freaking out as that is one of my pet peeves also. YOu can hit shots or make buckets or any number of things regarding putting the ball in the hoop but "Scoring the ball" has always rubbed me the wrong way. Count that as one of the things you will never see me say or write.

Sorry borna - I know you didn't write/type it. I probably should have left a little more of the quoted post in there. This is where I miss the highlighting or bold facing features.

My feeling is that I would say "Ryan Taylor is a great scorer with a nice jump shot." I wouldn't say, "Ryan Taylor is scoring the ball really well tonight." I don't even think it's necessary to say "Ryan Taylor is rebounding the ball well tonight" because in the game of basketball, again, it's implied what he's rebounding. Either way, it's probably splitting hairs, but it still grinds on me to listen to commentators and TV analysts routinely say it. To each their own I guess.

"Score the ball" didn't win the Trite Trophy, but maybe next year.

Those aren't the same. You shoot the ball. You score points.

Can you score points with "the rock," or does it smash and break the glass backboard? ;-)

You "handle" the rock, much like a newly engaged woman, to avoid turnovers.
