In the games I've seen, our bigs haven't set a lot of ball screens. I think I saw NDour try one today, but it looked like a half-hearted effort. The last five or six years we lived off ball screens to get guys open. It was the main thing that was mentioned as to why we beat G-town in the NCAAs. I don't know if we're not doing it this year because we're not as focused on our guard play or what.

I think I know the one you are referring to. He tried twice there. Bean just stood there dribbling about 8 feet away and did nothing with either.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems to me that could be a product of a different offensive approach this year.

I'm not sure who tunes in for the coaches show, but did anyone catch the "we don't do a very good job of seeing the floor" conversation? It's true, but I didn't expect to hear it from Saul on the radio.

Not sure if it is a different approach. I can't tell as the ball never gets there long enough to know what the set is going to be. We can see Tony and Treg and Mo go up to set screens but rarely are they used and rarely do we see the next progression of the play or options off what is available.

We got really used to seeing hi screens, down screens, cross screens, flare screens as DJ dissected the D and kept his dribble alive. We also got used to teams that used the screens and ball movement via the pass through a pattern to isolate a man for an open shot in rhythym. We are not seeing that and everyone is left wondering what we are running.

I'd say we run nothing from what I have seen. Looks like a bunch of not that good 1v1 players or quick shots in the clock. That is what frustrates me about the coaching, Seems to either be ok with it or unwilling to try to change it up. Why not just tell them don't shoot until you see 15 or less on the clock or your ass is on the bench. The last game, assists, turnovers and steals stats were flat out brutal.

OK ....lets say you sit them who are you gonna go with?......Young studs are not ready to go the whole game, even if they could Laster and taylor are not ready to run the show mentally or physically. Who else ya got? Simmons, Dartis and Block are a year away....You can't rattle your saber without the ability to take out the blade. What exactly are you suggesting...... putting the ball in the hands of the walk ons? I have been up and down the roster several times trying to figure it out. Maybe you see something I can't

I don't know the interworkings of our team chemistry, but from what I've seen this year is it safe to say that most of Bean/Ndour's attempts to help another this year been half hearted? Are those guys on the same page?

I would go with the guys that work the hardest regardless of skill level. I would tell the team that the next time they don't work hard to fight through a screen they are coming out and will sit the rest of the game. I couldn't care less about winning another game this year if it sends a message to the guys who will be here next year and beyond. If this was a case of just not having enough talent to compete then I'd understand but when players refuse or are unable to run the offense as it's drawn up they sit. If they give less than full effort on the defensive end they sit. If the 5 hardest working guys are 5 walk-ons then I'm losing by 30 with 5 walk-ons.

There are different kinds of bad play. There is lack of talent bad play. Treg Setty gives full effort but some guys can just blow by him because his lateral movement is so slow. He plays for me. Then there is dumb play. Bean Willis runs into the same screen over and over and over. He sits. And there is lazy play which IMO is the worst sin. When he gets beat one of our bigs has to switch to stop his man but Bean shows no interest in blocking out the big that our guy had to leave and that man invariably gets the offensive rebound and putback. He sits. Right now IMO the message Saul is sending is that talent trumps effort.

I've recently begun to wonder about this as well.

Van, I'm kinda with you on your thoughts about playing the guys that do the most with their talent, and do what they're being asked to do. After the EMU game, I was calling for walk-on's to start if that's what it would have taken. I agree that maybe Saul has to prove the point that effort and doing what is being asked will trump talent, if only to keep the guys that return next year going. The only caveat is that I don't see practices, and I don't know what's being said in the meetings and locker room.

Of course the idea that we'll have SIX or more new faces next year doesn't hurt the motivation to prove your worth to the team right now.

Not any different than those who have gone before him. "Tom, at the end of the day your talent has to be bigger than your sins" Heard this before but I really do not get the same feeling I did back then.
