No, it was the next day. I saw him after the game and he was really upset they lost.

I think it was more the people around him than the man himself.
Can't trust my old guy memory. I blame that on my days in Athens.

I also thought the story goes he called, not texted (this is 2006 ya know)...Ray Mernagh (not Andy Katz). Mernagh was writing his book "1 chance 2 chance" in which he published Fears' selfish comments.

By the time we're done here it will have been Keith Wilkes writing a three page letter to Chick Hearn about how he schooled John Shumate. Getting old is fun.

This is true, but the Katz thing is plausible too.

Thanks, guys, for all the history lessons -- especially those that were accurate. ;-)

This gives me the opportunity to give you the name of a good Civil War booK: David Blight's "Race and Reunion: The American Civil War in Memory." This tome documents how the generally accepted memory of the war changed over the years, depending on various political and social winds at any given time. Prof. Blight is one of the leaders in a relatively new historical discipline called "memory studies." He could have field day here on BA! ;-)
