Currently, the Pioneers are 16-0, 9-0 in the OAC. They are ranked #5 in the nation in NCAA Division III.

If only they had the foresight to schedule Marshall as their D1 exhibition game this year instead of Ohio.

Shameless plug for myself but since it was brought up...I currently host a weekly podcast covering the OAC as well as the Division III basketball in the Great Lakes in general. I interview a different coach from the conference each week and will have Muskingum head coach Gene Ford (yes, that Ford family) on this Sunday.

I fully plan on sneaking in at least one question about Geno and Dustin's time in Athens.

Anyone have an update on Caleb and Brian? I thought that Caleb had the chops to work in any large market.

I could tell you so many side-splitting stories about Gene Ford... (Unfortunately, this is probably not the proper forum for that!)

I really need to call him some time and see how he's doing.

great year for the pioneers, too bad they will probably have to travel to Wooster in the ncaa tournament because of gym size.

dave, I thought that the first round tourney game site was determined by best record, highest seeded team gets first round home game. Is that not so ?
Marietta vs Mount Union was a real battle last Wednesday. Refs really let the play get very physical and neither team would back down. Some very good basketball played at this level if you pick your games to see. The Marietta-Mount Union re-match at Mount should be another great game. Well worth a road trip for basketball junkies !

The Mount Union games I have had the opportunity to watch have always been VERY physical affairs. Moreso than many d3 teams I have watched going back to the 70s. The strength training and coaching seem to go hand in hand for that style of hoops even more than the game itself has changed in the same time period. Interesting thread

Marietta hosted the 1st and 2nd rounds the year they went 27-4 (2010-2011) before having to go to Wooster for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds. I know that gyms that don't have enough capacity (1,000 seats or below) generally get passed over for hosting tournament games but I believe Marietta easily clears this mark and has hosted tournament games before. The only reason I think they went to Wooster that year was because Wooster earned that on merit. If Marietta can finish the season out well, I think Marietta could host throughout until the Final 4.

Speaking to the physicality of play in the OAC, it's a very physical league. You def. need your big boy pants on to play there and I think that's true of most Division III conferences in the Midwest.

I wasn't sure about the size of Marietta's gym. I did remember though it is smaller then Wooster's which seats around 3500 I believe. That plus past reputation and easier access for other teams to get there makes Wooster a betting favorite to host. If going by this years accomplishments it would be difficult to pick against Marietta especially with the NCAC being it would appear a weaker league this year. Results of top teams in NCAC yesterday were not good for helping Wooster's cause either.
