So would you say this was a breakout season for him in his 5th year? A year ago he was just another run of the mill big in the transfer portal from Illinois State? And this 1 season at Buffalo has flipped him to an NBA prospect?

I just don't see it.
Prior to this year he had 24 starts. This year he had 31. Prior to this year he had 5 3pt made. This year he had 37. This year he scored 553 of his career 998 points.

So yeah, this was definitely his breakout year in terms of production.
But that is kind of my point. We keep hearing he has this NBA game that is obvious on the court, yet he was given almost no opportunity until joining a lowly Buffalo team. It doesn't make sense. At least with Emoni Bates there was a history there that added context to why he was meddling on a weak MAC team.

Yeah Sy Chatman is the only real NBA talent in the league IMO, and he got absolutely nothing. Criminal.
Can someone fill me in on why Sy Chatman is an NBA talent? Bench player at Umass, bench player at Illinois State, solid player on terrible team. An NBA talent could've presumably went anywhere for his final year, he chose lowly Buffalo. A 6'8" forward. How? Why? What am I missing?
Because he's extremely athletic and versatile which is what NBA forwards are.

I have no idea how he ended up at Buffalo but he scored 25 and 22 against us, 25 against Toledo, 24 and 23 against Akron, 27 against Ball St., 21 vs a very good Richmond team, 19 vs an outstanding James Madison team, 20 vs very good St. Bonaventure, 21 vs Western Kentucky, etc.

He might or might not get drafted late in the 2nd round but if he doesn't, the opportunity will be there to play NBA summer league and maybe get signed to a 2-way contract to go back and forth between the G-league and the big team.

Malik Dia averaged 2 points and 2 boards per game in the SEC but as soon as he transferred, now he averages 17 and 6. And shows up on some 2025 NBA mock drafts. Ohio would be a sweet 16 team this year with Dia.

Mind you, I didn't say Chatman was a sure-fire NBA guy. In fact, I doubt he makes it. If anything he'll be a late 2nd round flier, or FA G-League guy if at all.

I'm just saying he has the best NBA potential and skillset of anybody in the MAC this year, and that fact makes it awkward that he got absolutely zero league recognition.
