The deed is done. I'm VERY interested to see how this plays out.

Again, I hate to make the cruel comparison, but it's Saul Phillips 2.0 in Columbus. Super guy, just couldn't get it done and a new era needed to be ushered in.

It's difficult to be chugging along at 14-11, with 16 straight road losses, while the women's team is #2 in the country. But to ease his pain, he'll get a $14 million buyout: https://www.si.com/college/ohiostate/basketball/ohio-stat...

Not a bad little departing gift. I wonder if Gene Smith wasn't retiring if they would've canned him awhile ago. 0 road wins in over a year has to be unacceptable for any AD.

Anything is fair game when it comes to Columbus Tech.

The local media LOVED the man and would still probably agree with your comparison, as do I.

I’d be shocked but not shocked; but Boals naturally listed as a candidate. I think Pat Kelsey would be the HR hire OSU is looking for personally.

I can't believe Boals, based on what he's done as a head coach at Stony Brook and Ohio, will be considered for the position by those making the decision.

Bizarre timing.

Gene is retiring. Bjork doesn't take over until July.

So they just wanted to wipe the stench of Holtmann off in hopes to sell a few more tickets in the last three weeks of the season?

Bjork is already in Columbus and is basically in the wings operating as AD in waiting. Don't be shocked if he's the one calling the shots on this.

I've always wondered what Ohio State actually wants to be in terms of their basketball program. It's like the opposite situation of Kentucky, but they've also been wildly more successful in basketball than Kentucky has been in football. Do they think they should be a perennial title contender? At least a Sweet 16 participant every other year or so?

Blank check to Nate Oats.

But.... Buzz Williams... Bjork bringing his guy? Was SEC Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2023.

Big fan of Pat Kelsey. Born in Cincy. Played at Xavier. Crushing it at Charleston.

Think OSU is such a big job you really need to have been in at least a semi-big seat at some point. You're gonna be dealing with NIL conversations that are larger than your old budget and all the overwhelming stuff of being at the largest athletic department in the country. I think he'd be awesome though. He's gonna be a great coach.

Greg McDermott? He might be a Creighton lifer, but I bet he's ready for the next big adventure.

Groce? I wouldn't be surprised if they interviewed him either.

They think they should be a title contender every year, in every sport. The most pressure is on the football and men's b-ball program, but the expectation is there across the board.

I think Groce will get a look but I don't expect him to be hired. He's had success in the MAC but his time at Illinois wasn't spectacular.

Maybe they'll lure Matta back from Butler.

In the very unlikely event that Boals was hired there, I'd be for a trade. Holtmann did a fairly respectable job at Butler. Overall 70–31 (.693), and 34–20 (.630) in the Big East. And, he know his way around campus.

I think it depends how OSU views itself in the CBB landscape. Buzz Williams has been pretty consistent, but his ceiling is Elite 8/Sweet 16. Which should be more than enough for OSU, but like I said, it might have greater aspirations.

I'm not sure he excites a fanbase, either. I'm seeing Sean Miller, Dusty May, and Lamont Paris as the favorites according to odds --- favoring Paris the most. He's from Findlay and played at Wooster so that could work. South Carolina is 21-3 and cruising right now.

To be clear, I was surprised to see Boals name. However, his name seems to circulate every season as a mid-major coach that should be in consideration for a P5 job. Even if our program in particular has been trending in the wrong direction.

Agree with MDWST. Lamar in any unlikely event that Boals is plucked.

Do they though? For my money most OSU football diehards I know couldn't care less about the basketball team unless they're doing something good. More bandwagony in that regard I guess is my point.

Don't forget about LaMont Paris at South Carolina (21-3). Born and raised in Ohio, played at Wooster. Knows the lay of the land, was a long time assistant coach at Wisconsen. Turned around mid-major Chatanooga, now has done the same at South Carolina.

Lived in Chicago Lakeview/Rosemont during the Ray Meyer era. DePaul hoops was really good. Been on the skids for a while.

Will be a huge lifestyle change living in the area and commuting...but I am still a fan. Hope he does well. With all the openings coming surprised this is the choice

Very familiar with Lakeview. I’ve been in the city the last 9 years. I have no P5 affiliation so I’m rooting for Holtmann and have always kept a pulse on DePaul. If he produces the way he did at Butler, he’s a legend. If he produces the way he did at OSU, he’s a success.

The bar isn’t high and the bones are there (campus in Lincoln Park, Wintrust Arena is amazing). Hopefully the NIL dollars flow in a little easier now. Looking forward to seeing how he handles the portal.

Bama just sent a Brinks truck to Oats’ house, so looks like he’s off the board.
