I think I'd like to hang out with the people behind this list for a few weeks.

Kind of a reach. We think it's cool because of our experience, but would you go way out of your way to visit?

I think it depends on what you're looking for in a long weekend excursion. If you like visiting a city for the weekend, prefer higher end dining and pro sports, then yeah, it's not going to be for a lot of people.

On the other hand, if you like college towns because they offer a fun vibe, have some college sports & music, and you like a laid back town with a couple wineries, breweries, and outdoor activities, then Athens is a great weekend stop. Plus, you can park the car for the whole weekend and walk everywhere you want to go.

which is reflected in the other communities they identify.

I don't put a whole lot of stock in clickbait lists, but I'm not sure why anyone questions it when Athens lands in a "best" list.

I'm a sucker for college towns and I've been to a bunch, and I'd put Athens up there with any of them. I've recommended Athens to all kinds of people ever since I was a student, and everyone who has visited has loved their time there. I'm back often, and it's not just for the games or the bars. OK, I admit that Jackie O's and Friday happy hours at Tony's are highlights.
Still, there's a reason my wife enjoys Athens as much as I do even though she went to school somewhere else. We love the farmer's market, natural beauty and the overall ethos of the place.

It's more than a reach. I love Athens as much as anyone, but whoever ranked Athens in the Top 20 coolest towns needs to get out and travel the US a hell of a lot more. Top 20?! That's comical. I had to double check to see if the article was written on April 1st.

Well, a fair number of people do go out of their way to make a visit to Athens, not sure what you mean by "way" out of your way.

I nominate Manitou Springs, Colorado. Any town that has casket races, spring water tasting(just bring your cup), fruitcake toss contest, an old arcade and Pikes Peak cog railroad has to be up there someplace.
