Great game against SDSU. Last night NDSU had a brawl with Oral Roberts University and pulled out the win in the final seconds. Two really good games.

Those that want to see what "Saul Ball" will look like in a couple of years need to watch ND States run this year. I watched the game tonight with the "how with that work in the MAC" view. Saw a lot of things I liked.

Maybe? The Summit is a much, much worse conference than the MAC. This year, at least.

well, this year they beat Akron 55-46 and lost to Kent St 53-52, that should give you some idea.

It doesn't matter. Basketball is basketball. What I saw tonight was good fundamental basketball. The only difference is he should be able to recruit better athletes to do it here. Besides we hung with the top teams in the MAC this year and we are much, much worse than NDSU.

What I liked, and hope we'll see more of, are kids that know how to make passes to the cutter down low. Also, the ball moved around A LOT in the second half for NDSU. I wasn't watching closely to how well they defended guard penetration, Ohio's achilles heal on defense this year.

And remember, Coach Phillips took his NDSU team into Kalamazoo last year and beat the future 2014 conference champs on their own floor.

A quick look at the rest of the Summit had SDSU losing to Buffalo at Buffalo 69-67, IPFW beating Miami at home, 86-78, and IUPUI beating Ball State at home 71-69. Not sure that translates into the Summit being any worse than the MAC, but who knows?

The one thing I have noticed from a lot of the mid major type games I have been watching is the passing. Often, the ball is switched by pass-pass-pass with the ball never being dribbled. Also, a lot of dribble-dribble-pass.

This is one thing I will never understand about this year. It just seemed to me SP never got the team/players disciplined enough to pass the ball around. You can blame that on the players too but the fact that the head Coach let it go on and on and on just baffled me. At one point in the season didn't someone even say require 6 passes each and every possession? At least you slow the game down and don't get blown out most nights if you do that.

It gets back to I just hope to see us run some kind of offense and play better defense....duh? Brilliant observations, eh?!?

I think a major challenge Saul had this year is what a lot of step parents deal with when they are first breaking in with their new stepchildren, especially if that stepchild had poor relationships with his parents. A cousin and I were very close growing up and I observed him struggle with connecting with this step dad for a long time in this same way. He had trust issues and it seemed like the harder his step dad tried to build into him, the more he would push away.

Some of our players were on their third coach since coming to Ohio. They were probably already jaded/disenfranchised and there was nothing the coach could do to get through to them. Throw in the fact that SP was shorthanded and you get what we watched unfold over the season.

Our program has too strong of a pedigree to be down long. We are usually good to great, with a bad season every now and again, unlike some other programs that are underachieving to average who will have a banner year once every 15 years. Watching a little bit of last night's Summit game has me excited to see what Saul will do in the coming years, once he has his blueprint in full swing.

Kenpom.com has the MAC as the 11th best conference this year. Summit is 21st.

RPI has the MAC as 10th best conference. Summit again 21st.

I'm guessing the MAC is just deeper in terms of good teams. The top 2-3 teams in the Summit appear to be capable of beating any MAC team on any court.

Funny how many of us watched that game to check out how NDSU played on offense.

Or it could be that ranking systems devised by human beings tend to reinforce the things that those human beings believe, which is basically my own human belief about RPI, "power rankings" and every statistical ranking model ever devised.

The theories behind the RPI are nothing like the "power rankings", which I agree are complete nonsense. RPI isn't everything, but it's a solid indicator of how good a team really is.
