The Pioneers are now 25-2 on the season and hosting the OAC tournament championship game against Mount Union tonight. Pioneers ranked #9 nationally in NCAA Div. III.

Coach Vanderwal named OAC coach of the year and Garrett Stephenson the player of the year.

Looks like Mount Union pulled the upset tonight, won 85-81. Bad for Marietta, good for Coach Fuline.

Game was close throughout. Standing room only crowd at Marietta. Offenses dominated this game. Mount played better defense and worked for better shots during the last three minutes of the game, and that was the difference.

Jeff, do you think Marietta will still get a bid? With their great record and regular season championship, top ten ranking I would hope so! I went over for the semi-final win over B.W. but did not go to the Mount Union final. I did see Marietta beat Mount earlier in the year at Marietta in a real battle. I thought that Marietta would have to play very well to handle Mount again. Two pretty even teams who both play very hard. Great competition at this level of college basketball!

Marietta will still get an at-large today. I still think they will be high enough to host the first weekend's games this weekend as well. The OAC is very strong at the top this year with Mount Union, Marietta, and even John Carroll (firmly on the bubble) possibly getting in. Been quite awhile since the OAC had 3 teams in the tournament (1996 I believe).

Edit: If the rumors are true, Mount Union will be the top team in the Great Lakes. Marietta and Mount Union both have a great chance to host.

NCAA Selection Show is at 12:30 PM this afternoon.

Marietta will host Medaille College Friday night at 8:00 PM. Wooster plays Misericordia at 5:00 in the other first round game at 5:00 on Friday. Good doubleheader of basketball right there.

Good luck to the Pioneers this weekend. If they play Wooster that will be a great game.

It will be a rowdy place. Best atmosphere I ever experienced at a basketball game was Wooster-Capital ncaa game in 2009. Wooster represents also incredibly well.

Marietta-Wooster have two of the most devoted fan bases in DIII. They may want to move this one to the Convo if these two play Saturday.

Unless it's at 9AM it ain't happening. Just no time available. Women play Fiami at two followed by two D2 district semi matches that will be well attended. And, yes, I understand it was proposed in mild jest.

Ban Johnson should be literally shaking on Friday!

It was made in jest. :) Maybe I'll do the OU-Marietta doubleheader Saturday.

Wooster-Marietta would have a bigger crowd in the convo the Bobcats will have for either of their games.

Marietta just defeated Wooster, 88-86, in the second round of the NCAA Div. III tournament on the home court of the Pioneers. Both had won first round games at Marietta to advance.

Marietta now advances to the Div. III round of 16 in Salem, VA, to face the winner of St. Olaf and Defiance.

Marietta's RaNeal Ewing hit the game winning shot with 4 seconds left after driving into the lane. Wooster was able to set up a 28 foot three at the buzzer but the shot bounced off the rim.

(Ewing was a teammate of Ohio's David McKinley at Dublin Scioto).

great job Pioneers. Congrats also to Wooster for another great season. Good luck Marietta next week against St. Olaf. Great year for the Pioneers and the OAC as Mt. Union advances also.

St Olaf is the only school with a waltz for a fight song: Um Ya Ya you Olies:

Daughter graduated from there but the big question was who the hell was St Olaf anyway? The patron saint of pillage????

St Olaf has a world class music program though; excellent Christmas concerts.

Irish fans are excited for RaNeal and his teammates. It's been a journey for him, but he ended up at the right place. He has a knee problem that limited his minutes some this season and it caused him to sit out the exhibition game.

St. Olaf - Solid facts, Oldkatz. Can you confirm the new mascot is Omar the Snowman from Frozen?

Correction: webcast announcers kept saying the next game would be in Salem VA, but actually the sites for the various Sweet 16 games have yet to be determined. Salem VA is the site of the Final Four.

The Division III round of 16 is divided into four "sectionals" of four teams each, each sectional being hosted by one of the tparticipating teams. Marietta will face St Olaf (MN) at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, on Friday. The host Augustana will take on Mount Union. The two winners then play on Saturday for the bid to the Final Four in Salem, VA.

Augustana gained some notoriety earlier this season by defeating Bradley n an exhibit game.

Seems like I remember another d3 team giving a d1 team all kinds of trouble this year. Would be nice to see the Pioneers play the Raiders one more time this year.
