So, let's see, three Big 12 P5 teams have played on neutral courts today and all have lost - to UAB, Georgia State, Butler.
But next year? Given the Selection Committee's chronic memory disorder, we'll no doubt see most all at-large bids going to teams from the P5 conferences, including some finishing at or below .500 in their conferences and getting to 20 wins only because they will have larded their non-conf schedules with cupcake home games.
Jim Schaus could make a genuinely meaningful contribution to college basketball by working for changes in at-large selection criteria - such as at least .500 conference records and at least 3 or 4 non-conf road games.
I wish that type of thing would happen, where there were "minimum criteria" to be considered for an at large bid, but I can't see how it happens. Both of your suggestions I'm in complete agreement with.
The Illusion of Power grew stronger as the weekend progressed. In addition to Big 10/14 champ Wiscnsin, the conference was awarded 6 at-large bids. How many of those at-large teams managed to escape the weekend? 1
Coach Matta openly acknowledges scheduling cupcakes. Which leads to the question: Just how deserving - or powerful - was OSU? It played 13 non-conference games. Two were against North Carolina (Big 10/ACC Challenge) and Louisville. OSU lost both. Their other 11 non-conference games? All were at home against UMass-Lowell, Marquette, Sacred Heart, Campbell, James Madison, Colgate, High Point, Morehead State, North Carolina A&T, Miami OH, Wright State. So, how powerful was OSU?
And just how powerful would it look if to qualify for an at-large bid, it had to go on the road for at least 3 or 4 non-conference games. It might actually make reaching 20 wins something of a challenge.
But why should OSU and other power-conference schools risk more road games? Heck, just finish at or about .500 in conference play, schedule a gaggle of home cupcake games, get to 20 wins and the Selection Committee which claims to look not at conference affiliations but only at team performance is likely to award a bid.
