Panathinaikos Athens (A1) is about to sign 25-year old American (has also Bosnian passport) point guard D.J. Cooper (183-80kg-90, college: Ohio, agency: N.E.T.) who currently played at Enisey Krasnoyarsk in Russia. In 15 VTB games he had 10.1ppg, 3.3rpg, 7.9apg and 2.1spg this season. He helped them to make it to the quarterfinals. A very impressive season as he was voted Eurobasket.com All-EuroChallenge Defensive Player of the Year and named to 3rd Team. Cooper also played 29 games in VTB United League where he recorded 11.2ppg, 3.5rpg, 9.1apg (top 2) and 2.0spg (leader !!!). The last season he played at PAOK Thessaloniki. In 35 games he recorded 10.6ppg, 4.6rpg, 6.5apg and 1.7spg. He contributed to his team making it to the semifinals. Quite impressive season as he was voted Eurobasket.com All-Greek A1 League Guard of the Year, Eurobasket.com All-Greek A1 League Co-Newcomer of the Year and named to 1st Team. Cooper also played 10 games in Eurocup where he recorded 10.2ppg, 4.7rpg, 6.5apg (top 2) and 2.1spg (in top 4).
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others he played in the final of MAC Tournament in 2013. Cooper was also voted All-MAC Player of the Year in 2013 at his college time.
Cooper graduated from Ohio University in 2013 and it is his second season as a professional player.

Except he didn't graduate in 2013.

And what about the rumor he was spending some time in Athens this summer to finish up and get his degree?

I'm looking forward to seeing his jersey hanging in the Convo.

I'm thinking he'll get around to it, but not if it interferes with a chance to play.

After watching Matthew Dellavedova for the Cavs with lots of talent around him, I wondered to myself how DJ would have performed in the same situation. I realize the height difference but how good has DJ's defense become to receive honors? Could DJ offer an NBA team a few very good minutes a game when he would be the fifth best player on the floor for his team? Could he have kept Rose from going off?

A Chicago reporter said that like MJ, Lebron makes everyone around him better than they ever thought they could be.....would Coop have been able to shine in Cleveland as the backup?

I watched Dellavedova play several times while he was at St. Mary's. I tend to believe that DJ was/is at least the equal of Della as a passer, but Della clearly was/is a better shooter. And, yes, the height diff is substantial.

And I think Dellavedova's stronger than DJ. LBJ said after Thursday's game that Delly (as he's now known here in Cleveland) is the toughest player on the CAVS.

Well, strength and toughness are different qualities. DJ has plenty of toughness, awesome durability. I still think DJ could help an NBA team, but he's not an NBA shooter, and maybe Dellevedova is?
