Per Goodman and Thamel. I wonder what he did...

Source: Bowling Green is firing first-year basketball coach Chris Jans following an investigation into his public conduct. -@SIPeteThamel

Edit: Official now from the Bowling Green Athletic Department

My mistake on the Thread title, I was just surprised that he was let go.

Though this is a rival program, I hate to see this happen on several levels. Could set that program back for a few years.

WOW! He really did a great job in his first year at BG too. He took them right out of the basement and made them a contender immediately. If not for a late season slump, he probably would have been MAC coach of the year as BG woulda had the top seed. Shocking.

Hearing a cell phone video at a bar was involved in firing of Bowling Green basketball coach Chris Jans.

Sheesh. Just when it looked like the program was turning around. Huge stuff.

I'm not so sure this looks good for B.G. just firing him without some sort of detailed investigation. Unless they really have the hard evidence and they know Jans won't come back with a civil suit.

It happen nearly 2 weeks ago, how much more time do they need to investigate an incident that took place in a public bar and was captured on video?

Insiders seem to think given the severity of what happened they are pretty happy the AD took action and made the swift decision. Not sure what happened but the school website is pretty tightlipped and read that this is all that will be said.

One of the funniest tweets I read was a reply to another tweet about a bar that had changed it's name many moons ago....it was hashtagged #WeAreFalconOld which i personally makes a better T shirt than the Old Zoners. I thought, Yes, you falcon are.....

Some more details. You just can't have a guy like this representing your university.

Definitely enough cause here. Just wonder if he would have been fired if there was no video. Unfortunate situation for BG program.

Whether they would've fired him without the video depends on how forthcoming the bartender, other patrons and the assistants who got him out of there would be. It certainly would've impeded the investigation.

People do stupid things when they're drunk, including unwanted advances. But when you're a coach, you're on a really short leash (at least these days). Ten years ago we were fortunate that Solich only passed out and ran his car into a curb, and there was no video. (Yes, ultimately it was determined that he was drugged, but that finding was made well after the fact.) Now, everything is potentially caught on camera in some way.

This is nuts.

But Jans will do pennance somewhere, maybe get a job as a high school coach and stumble upon the greatest player of a generation, which he can parlay into a mid-major job in that kids hometown that will coat him in teflon against future accusations of impropriety.

probably right Pete. Eustachy has been toiling in anonymity since he did the same thing at Iowa State. Really good coaches with stupid moments have a path to follow to get back to the level they had attained based on their skills. It is the price of stupidity, beliefs, bad actions etc....

After reading the termination letter, it is a pretty clear-cut case.

Stunning to say the least. First thought, does the guy have a true drinnking problem? Second thought, why wouldn't either the BBall Director of Operations whom picked Jans up that night and drove him to the bar or ANY of the Bball assistants who were at the bar realize Jans was hammered and protected him from himself? It's not like their paychecks weren't on the line by all of this.

That's a really good question. It's hard to fathom that -- whether you are a coach or a player -- with so much on the line and being held to a higher standard publicly, why you would put yourself in those situations.

Character check in Bowling Green. Wrong to be out in a bar at a college town, wrong again to be getting drunk at a bar, inappropriate contact that only the sleaziest guys would do is wtf. Reeks of desperation from a guy nobody likes.
