I saw an article in the Boston Globe the other day that said BC has 9 scholarships to fill for next year. Didn't sound right so I looked into it and basically its true. 3 of those are going to incoming freshmen who have signed LOIs, but that still leaves 6 scholarships unassigned with 30 days left in the open signing period.

Of the 4 scholarship players returning 2 of them did not play a minute last year. One of those was a true freshman that hurt his knee before the season started and the other was a RS freshmen who has been out for 2 years with ACL problems. Neither of these players have logged a single minute in an actual college game yet and I don't know for certain if they are healthy now or not.

That leaves 2 scholarship players returning with any college experience, a senior starter and a junior backup that combined for 10pts/gm. How are they going to fill 6 scholarships with players that can compete in the ACC at this point in the year? Makes our coach transition look like a walk in the park.

According to the roster posted on their website, they should have 8 returning players from this year. Were 4 of those non-scholarship players this year?

Hanlon is leaving for the draft, Magerity is transferring out and the other two are walk-ons. Thats 2 scholarships that were unexpected to open but JC and staff have known all year that 7 scholarships would be open for next year and have only landed 3 commits. The 4 returners are-

Sr Dennis Clifford, C- avg 2pts/gm in limited minutes as a Fr and So, avg 6.9pts/5.5reb in 25min/gm as a junior.
Jr Garland Owens, F- avg 3.5pts/2reb playing 15min/gm in his first two seasons.
(RS) So Darryl Hicks, G- missed two years in a row for ACL injuries. Fans on BC message board not confident he returns next year.
(RS) Fr Idy Diallo, F- 3 star recruit with several high maj offers, looks to have potential if healthy.

Yikes. I wonder what the deal is there? Hoping to land a couple of the highly rated late commits? Or did a few kids back out of verbals?

I am sure there are plenty of JUCO kids that need some place to play.

As predicted a year ago when he took the job, Christian will be back coaching in the MAC in 2018.

love how every comment under the article is attacking the author for getting some dates wrong about their prior success while completely ignoring the point of the article- success is in the past, regardless of when and how much, and the present and near future are in for a tremendous amount of change, good or bad. Head in the sand.

BC update-

Assistant Coach Preston Murphy has left BC after 1 season to join the coaching staff at Creighton. Murphy had been the Dir of Ops for BC from 06-10. Lots of doom gloom from the BC boards but I can't tell how valid it is as they tend to be overly dramatic about everything.

BC still has 6 scholarships unfilled.

Can you imagine the doom & gloom on this board if we had SIX scholarships unfilled in the middle of May?

Looks like a total jailbreak away from that program. It should be interesting there next year. After watching their issues, our transition problems are relatively minor.

this is why I'm not sure how to take their fans' reaction to their Asst leaving by saying that he was the best recruiter on the staff. If you're known as the best recruiter on my staff and you've had all year to fill 7 spots and you only fill 3 you probably should be moving on. Who knows, it is amusing though.

I saw one statement on a BC board just after JC left and we hired Phillips. It said that Ohio got the best end of this "trade." I believe that to be correct!

I agree with you. Not because I think poorly of JC as a coach and recruiter, but because I can see that Saul wants to build a program that can have sustained success. The next 2-3 seasons are going to be fun watching that program develop. As for Coach Christian, I just hope he gets the time to build his program at BC.

Again, I say, we got the best of BC on this trade. ;-)

In year one, I would say neither coach set the world on fire given their records. Time will tell how things turn out! I would say OUr odds are much better than BC. I just don't see BC as ever becoming a top tier program in the ACC but I do see OHIO as a power in the MAC!
