Leon was a beast from the onset, starting all 32 games nearly 12 ppg and 8.6 rebounds.

Evans isn't rated the recruit that Trent was but he probably is about the same or a little higher rated that Leon Williams was. The MAC is also a lot worse now that it was then. I haven't seen Evans play but he looks like he must be a different style of player. He isn't as thick as Williams and Trent were. I don't know how much that matters. Possibly a lot.

But when you go back and look it is a lot easier to remember the guys that did succeed early. Obviously, just because there were highly rated big man recruits that did play in the MAC a lot as freshman that we can recall doesn't mean that they all did. Heck, out of high school Wiznitzer was rated 4 stars by every major recruiting site.

As others have noted, Boals might have some real dilemmas with playing time with this team. This teams is almost certainly good enough to get into MAC contention now. I think the talent as far as depth goes is about as good as it has been in a while. That's the strength. But we lack an established star and the guy that has the best chance to be one probably isn't 100%. There is probably more higher rated talent in the freshman class than elsewhere but he has to try to win now and if the veterans are slightly better at this moment he has to find a way to keep the freshman here longterm in the portal era.

I think all of this is true ... but I also think it can be said for every team in the league, including the projected contenders. Even Akron, with all their star portal recruits, who is the standout in that bunch, on the team much less for the league.

That's not to say someone won't emerge. Someone likely will, and the same will be true for the Bobcats. Someone will emerge to lead the pack.

In terms of MAC star power returning, the PG at Central Michigan probably tops the list. But that's not to say he's the best in the league by any means.

There will be a lot of rising names and players in the MAC this season, I suspect. Including with the Bobcats!!!

THE Distributor is almost certainly going to have to be Jackson Paveletzke. Reef is a pretty good ball handler but he has a scorer mentality. Burris and Elliot come in as shooting or combo guards in high school. Sheldon's role is mostly as a shooter. James and Brown certainly aren't point guards.

I think that Paveletzke is probably going to be at least good and possibly great as the starting point guard. I don't think that it will happen but I think the most credible way that we end up close to the "floor" end of win total predictions other than injuries is that Paveletzke just never develops chemistry in running this offense.
Agreed with Paveletzke. He had a solid but not spectacular assist rate as a freshman at Elon. A bit less of a distributor than Jaylin -- more in line with Sears (though still a bit lower than Sears).

No idea what he was asked to do at Elon though and what his role was in the offense, so it's entirely possible he's capable if asked.

That said, I am very bullish on him given his numbers at both Iowa State and Elon. He was excellent as a freshman at Elon, and his rate stats were solid enough at Iowa State. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he's the leading scorer in our backcourt.
Pav went to Wofford, not Elon, FWIW.

But he and Reef are going to be the keys that drive this bus. If they can dominate a back court night in and night out, the other positions should just fall into place. Having Pav as a distributor is going to open up so many things for the offense - something that felt like it was lacking at times last season. It seemed like Jaylin had to make up too much of a scoring chunk, which isn't something you probably don't want out of your starting PG.

And if he can't be that guy (which I doubt), I'm really curious to see what Burris has to offer coming in. It's going to be hard to say a true freshman will steal some upper classmen's minutes, but this team needs someone to get the other guys the ball - especially shooters.

I'm with Leon and others on Searls - just be serviceable. Everything else on top is cream cheese icing. More than just the fundamentals it would be nice to have a backup big who doesn't foul more than he rebounds or scores. I'd be OK(ish?) with a three big rotation of Clayton, Hadaway and Searls if they can stay out of foul trouble. But that's just because we're so guard and wing heavy. Kuany and Evans could be thrown in emergency situations unless one of them completely outshines the other and earns meaningful minutes every game. I imagine one of those two will redshirt.

Really hope AJ and EJ can get back to form. Those two on the wings makes this team incredibly dangerous and a lot more athletic when attacking the rim. That was another thing that was severely lacking last season.

This team has potential, probably one of the highest ceilings/highest floor combinations we've seen in a while. At minimum this team, on paper, should win 20+ games easily IMO. Just gotta hope all the cards fall into place and the injury bug who has taken over the Convo in the last decade or so stays away from a major contributor.

Every team has questions, even prime contenders, but I think 'high ceiling' and 'high floor' compared to Ohio teams of recent past is not a stretch. However, the one area I think all MAC teams will struggle with, particularly early, is consistency and chemistry ... which is a direct result of The Portal.

The key to a 20-win season is winning 8-10 non-conference games, as most MAC teams that contend win 10-14 games in league play to finish with a Top 4 seed in MAC Tournament.

Pending the final schedule, I'd say winning 10-14 MAC games 'could' be more likely than 8-10 non-conference games.

At least, that's an early guess. Might change my mind come December.

I don't know that this is more true of the MAC or mid-majors. I think there's a lack of continuity across all of college basketball at the moment.

All of this is very true. That tourney game when A.J. went off showed what he was capable of. If he is healthy that will only help Pav and Reef on the wing. And how many teams have a guard like Elmore James coming off the bench or a 4-year starter like Searls? I think Searls is going to be better than some on here expect. Maybe not out of the gate but neither was Tommy Schmock and he turned out to be pretty good. I wish I was a fly on the wall in practice to see Evans and Kuany get after it. Similar builds, athleticism and youth! Whooo boy. Has to be fun for Boals. This year's team has to be his most complete in terms of athletes, experience and cohesiveness.

My guess is that there's such a big physical difference between 18 year olds and 22 (23?) year olds that a 22 year old with 4 years of college ball -- even at a D3 level -- is probably more likely to be able to slot in as a replacement level player in the MAC than an 18 year old. 18 year olds probably have a higher ceiling, but also are more likely to need time to contribute at all.

If Searls can't contribute, I think that lowers the ceiling for this team quite a bit. Maybe I'm overstating how rare it is for a true freshman big to be an impact player in the MAC though. Are there a lot of examples?
That is definitely something I'm sure they are/were considering. And I agree. Skill difference is pretty vast generally, but a 22-23 year old who has consistently put up numbers in D2 I feel can run pretty closely to a D1 freshman.

I think I've talked up Hill so much even I'm tired of hearing it, but kid had years of developing his shots and his confidence in JUCO, comes to BG and dominates. Would he have done that as a freshman? Maybe, but I doubt it. Where he was last season is honestly pretty close to what I expect from AJB this year.

With that said...

I've never seen Searls play outside of a few clips here or there, but a 250 pound 23 year old vs an 18 year old... I expect him to play. And I suspect he can hold his own more than Nichol, Kuany, etc and I bet he can bully Hadaway a bit in practice. It should only make our bigs be a little better prepared for some stronger C's that might want to bully them down low.

Two year starter for Ashland averaged 15.4 points a game, while snagging 7.5 rebounds... shot 68 percent from the field, 45.4 percent from three and 71.4 percent from the line. He can play. Can it translate to a more athletic game? I think so.

Don't get me wrong, I am excited for the coming season. But man, there's a lot of unkowns. Will the transfers be what we expect them to be? How will this group "gel" together? Can AJB and EJ4 stay healthy? Will the freshmen be able to contribute meaningful minutes? It all looks great on paper, but I need to see how it plays out on the court before I get my expectations too high.

I think one key will be how much the PGs really look to put the ball into Searles hands. Are they just looking for dump-offs or PnR layups ... or are they (and Boals) looking to put the ball in his hands and let him go to work.

Boals' history ... when he has a good post guy ... is to give him opportunities to work on the block. In the long run, that opens up the game for everybody, IMO.

If this proves to be the case, then Ohio absolutely jumps into title contention as Sparks at Ball State, and Miami's rising freshman are the only true post scorers I can think of in the league (pending what we see from transfers).

If guards are willing to play 'inside/out' which may mean a few less 3-pointers, but a few more free throws, it could make for a very well balanced team come February and March.

Seeing us having hangouts like this really furthers my confidence in our cohesion as a team. Always saw them together on campus, and I think the increased trust will hope when we need teamwork. SO. EXCITED. Let's go get the MAC!

Yeah, they do need positive B-roll to highlight the guy, but hard not to notice him outworking AJC on the glass.

I know it’s only a few clips from practice, but he looks agile and coordinated. I think Vic is going to fit in just fine.

I don't ask for much out of Ohio's big men.

1.) Catch the ball
2.) Rebound the ball
3.) Set legal screens

I don't expect guys like Vic to be Wilt Chamberlain. I expect them to have the ability to give a solid 10-13 minutes of competent basketball off the bench without crushing the team in the +/- department. We didn't get that the last two years off the bench down low.

Wiz had back to back baseline drive dunks in the second half that electrified the crowd and helped spark that win over Fiami. Just sayin'

Looks like they split them up for scrimmage.
Burris, Reef, Hadaway, Searls, Paveletzke
Elliott, James, Brown, Clayton, Fifth guy I didn't see in pics but assuming it's Evans with Sheldon and Nichol split up on each team.

My question is: Who ya got in this game? I would say Team 1 but it's a close one.

I don’t think it’s too big of a stretch to think that we may be able to put two teams on the floor for many games where both are better than the the starting five of the team we are playing. Green cool aid???
