Marshall cares way more about the football program than they do basketball. If they were hiring a new football coach, they would do much better than that small salary.
That they do, however, they are suffering from the same fate of many Universities across the country. Ironically though in WV things seems even better, because Billionaire businessman and governor Justice and his administration seem to not be able to find $425 million in Covid-19 funds for education. The state has had their ratings downgraded in the past year.
The basketball coach situation is fairly complicated due to the influence of some major donors and state politics. I would imagine if the new coach is successful, he will receive a new contract with a major salary increase. The new coach only has a three year contract. If he doesn't turn it around, Marshall will invest in a new coach and give the person a competitive mid major salary. JMO
FWIW: I believe the Governor came up with $13.8 million (total cost of $23 million) for the new Marshall baseball stadium that just opened up a few weeks ago. I believe the money came from Covid funds.
https://governor.wv.gov/News/press-releases/2022/Pages/Go... The WV legislature gave Marshall $45 million last summer for the new cyber security building. WVU asked the legislature for the same amount of money to deal with their budget problem, but were not given any money. Strange times in WV.
