Missed this while I was out of the country in August.

What was Tommy's experience with AAU? My son just started his 6th season and the 4th with his current team and our experience has been positive. He is just getting into middle school so there are no conflicts yet. We've seen a little of the dark side (rampant cheating using kids who clearly aren't the right age, poaching, etc.) but we are at least a couple of seasons away until it starts getting really serious. But all the AAU sanctioned events we've played in have been well run.

Really good stuff. A great deal of reporting. You can tell Joe Sirera has institutional knowledge of that scene oozing out of him. Clean writing throughout.

I loved that kicker: “Travel ball is just like marriage,” he said. “If it’s right, through all the ups and downs, at the end of the day, you’ll be glad you did it. If you pick the wrong one for the wrong reasons, you’ll regret it for a long time.”

Thanks for sharing.

Good stuff. In my experience, travel ball provided a lot more good than bad. In fact, I would do it all over again if given a chance!
