EMU kicks off the 2015-16 season playing Vermont with an 11:00am tipoff time. They are currently down 30-27 at the half. Word is that Raven Lee has been suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules (in other words, let's see if we can keep what he really did under wraps).

Any idea why they scheduled this one at 11am? So they could have 100 fans at the game instead of 350?

Don't they do something with the local schools where they bring in kids for this game?

If they did, that would be a great promotion to do at every university towards the beginning of the season, or around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

I watched a little bit of the first half. Fairly impressive win for EMU, though losing Raven Lee for a bit won't be easy. That news broke right before tipoff it seemed. From what I saw, there looked to be a decent crowd there for EMU standards.

They call it "Education Day" and it involve busing in schoolkids from Ypsi and Detroit, so this is likely the biggest crowd they'll get this year.

The loss of Lee is huge. Supposedly it's academics, so who knows if/when he will return.

I asked EMU fans about the 11 A.M. tip a year or two ago and it was like bn9 said, they bring in school kids for the game.

I love that promotion. Great way to fill the place and elementary kids are so excitable they will make noise for just about everyone.

The one thing I don't like is that it is their home opener. If I was a season ticket-holder, I'd be ticked that I couldn't make the home opener because the game was during the average persons work day.

I think it'd be cool to see OU do something like this, but absolutely 100% not for the home opener. That game is a big deal IMO. Ideally, I would line this up sometime in Mid-December during the week. If we could somehow make it so it happened when OU was out of school but local schools were in session, that would be PERFECT. Not sure that is possible with us on semesters... Would've been great on quarters though.

I agree with your points on this Optimist - the home opener is a bad time for the promotion. Swing it for that first game when winter break starts and give all HS kids and younger a free ticket, and include adults for something like $5 or even $3. Seems like a fun way to get local folks interested in your program.

The women's program has been doing the education day at 11AM in the Convo for years. A few years ago it was held on a day that, unfortunately, all local schools were canceled due to snow. We may have had a dozen fans in the stands.

Jacksonville State AT Central Michigan right now on ESPN3.

Great to have basketball back. And it's great to get a look at what should be one of the top teams in the conference.

John Groce's seat just got a little hotter. Illinois losing by double digits at home to North Florida. Ouch.

#17 Wisconsin just lost at home to W Illinois, 69-67. Last time the badgers lost a home non-con game was 2006 vs North Dakota State.

The Summit League started well last night. Besides the WIU victory over Wisconsin, the Summit is 2-0 versus the Missouri Valley Conference. IUPUI beat Indiana State in Terra Haute and Oral Roberts cruised past Missouri State in Tulsa.

Lost 93-81, never led. Illinois had 3 players out with injuries and lost another one during the game. But injuries don't count apparently (according to several on this board) so Groce is in big trouble. It will be interesting to see if he survives the year or if he can pull it together with a bunch of new players.

With Beckman jettisoned the A D whacked and grumblings galore even before the season started about Grose he's in a tough spot. May be a total purge this year for the Illini.

Eek. Yeah, not a favorable start. Illini fans are not thrilled, to say the least.

Illinois gets their first lead of the season with 5 minutes to go in the game and overcomes a 14 point second half deficit to take out North Dakota State 80-74. Probably not going to soothe the fanbase much.
