Any wine bar that wants to be true to Athens will carry an assortment of wines from a little vineyard known as Boone's Farm. I recommend the '92 Strawberry Hill, a particularly delectable vintage.

I remember the '75 vintage like it was yesterday (and the morning after that day... :/ )

The t-shirt w/the label though was awesome!

BTW, anyone have a review for West End Cider house?
It's fantastic and fills a niche in Athens. In addition to serving pretty sophisticated local ciders, it's kind of a grown-up's cocktail bar with excellent local snacks. The proverbial "clean, well-lighted place" that Ernest Hemingway once described. Only caveat: It's expensive for Athens. I love Jackie O's, Tony's and many other uptown stalwarts, but I find myself at the Cider House quite a few weekends that I make it down.
Big fan, although it is a very eclectic mix of what I would estimate are grad students, faculty and other Athens glitterati. Definitely not an undergrad crowd. The former patrons of the West End Tavern would be appalled by the hipster quotient. Try the Vander Mill Totally Roasted cider. Tastes like the holidays would taste if they were a cider.

Right, Dave. Sullivan's spirit is shaking its head, looking for the Friday wings with Coors Light, and the slightly near-legal clients of yesteryear. Sully did appeal to a wide cross-section of Athens, though.

I remembered this thread, so my wife and I decided to check out the wine bar last night prior to the Kent game. Very impressed! Nice atmosphere and people and good selections!

Thanks for the heads up. That's been on the list of places I'd like to stop by while in Athens, but I've just not made it yet. What is your take on the wine (and food?) selections?

They had a pretty wide ranging selection with many different flights, including some Ohio selections. Any level of wino can find something they like! In addition, they have some seasonal selections, a cocktail menu, and a good variety of micro-brew beers. We did not try any of the food, but they seem to have a good variety of small plates at a reasonable price.

I had some Lake Erie Catawba, a pretty smooth Port, and my wife had her new favorite drink, a cocktail that had Ruby Port and some sort of rum in it. As should be expected, there is a markup from what you would expect at a winery serving their own wine (restaurant prices). I would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for something different!

Our recent bowl & tourney success coupled with "Best Fans in the MAC" marketing has really gone to our heads.

I don't check this board in a while, and judging by what thread is on top, I see that it's devolved by evolving into a wine & cidre connoisseurs symposium.

I mean we've beaten Fiami in just about everything recently so why not wine drinking? We'll have a great new moniker "Ohio: The snottiest fans in the MAC!"

;)

All jokes aside, I agree with Pete. I can be lured by small plates... and the to experiment with how the Bobcats look though wine goggles (as opposed to the traditional craft beer, whiskey, Aquarium, craft beer Aquarium ones)

Ok, one more joke...

This will only occur if you stop slumming it up at B-Dubs.

I check in there about twice a sports season. I'd rather go to Jackie O's, but if you don't get there early, getting food is equally challenging. Besides, the location is the real reason to stop there: From bar to basketball seat in about a 4 minute walk.

Talking about fans....why no comments in the actual game thread? ;)

The words "Lake Erie" and "Wine" should never be in the same sentence when speaking about anything that is drinkable.
