From Friday's Post...

"I see a group this year that's really come to work," Phillips said. "You got a lot more people on the ground for loose balls. You really look forward every day to getting in with this group."

Phillips said practices are structured differently compared to last season and that there was "transition" and communication problems in 2014.

"They have more questions than answers," Phillips said about this year's unit. "They're a lot of fun. This group is a bunch of fun."

Editorial translation from me: Last year's guys didn't listen or hustle as much as they should have.

Cyclical theme it appears with "chemistry much better this year, tighter/happy bunch, etc..." Then the following year we throw all the seniors under the bus and report that it really didn't turn out that rosy. How many years in a row have we heard that about basketball and even football? Guess it's a love-fest every preseason then the bickering begins.

3 Coaches in 4 years may have had something to do with some of the issues on our recent teams - changing philosophies and systems...

Seems a bit cynical eh? I don't think the cycles started till JC got here so it is not like it has been going on all that long. ( I may be wrong but I think we would be hard pressed to find JG or TOS quotes year to year with any similarity) In SP's 2nd year I think he is right in being honest with his feelings and is answering a question to the best of his ability. It looks to me to be an honest statement of fact and the history is ours as fans not his with the program. He may be totally unaware of what you see as a cycle. I think you are right in your analysis of a cycle but I think in this situation it is unwarranted and purely co incedental... we'll know next year eh? JMHO, but I think a lot of dysfunctional crap walked out the door so I expect unless some undercurrent or tone is carried forward with all the new faces present and SP at the helm we will see a kinder, gentler, more cohesive locker room and more of a team.

Why I like this years team is simple. The PG position is solidified and more of a TRUE PG. Bean, very solid player, was more of a SG. We might not have crazy up moments from last year (slaughtering DePaul, Bean's scoring rampage against Akron, or N'Dour's GW dunk against Buffalo), but overall this group will be much more cohesive and definitely win more games.

Borna, I hope you are right! And, I also hope we win more than 10 games. I don't think at least 13-15 wins is unreasonable.

If this team can pass like it showed in the scrimmage (once again, I realize it was an exhibition) I think we can easily win between 18 and 22 games with this group. Tony Campbell is the best big man in the league now that Moss was kicked off of Buffs. Jimmy Hall can't handle him. Chris Fowler at CMU is the only guard I'm scared of who could take Simmons. And Kenny will only get better and better. I think if Treg does even half of what he did in the exhibition (10 ppg, 4 rpg) we are going to be in great shape. Don't even get me started about the possibility of Wadley, Dartis and Laster improving off the bench. If We would have simply had Simmons last year we would have won 10 more games. His unselfishness would have carried us to more wins.

Not to throw stones too much at Bean, but I'm not sure even Simmons could have dealt with what happened last year to make things better. Good thing for him, he's dealing with this year, and a perceived different culture!

My biggest hope is that we see this group get better as the year goes along. I think it should be a given that they're better come February 1st than they are today. I wouldn't want to predict or guess what will happen though!

Wadly all but confirmed on the postgame what was visually evident about last years team. He sort of started then bit his tongue, but definitely made it known the chemistry at this point in time seemed much better than anything last season. I didn't take it as a diss to those that had left, but more as a positive for this group.

That was my take also. I was surprised Russ asked the question the way he did - some good diplomatic skill in Wadley's answer - you could tell he was a bit hesitant and then deliberate with his answer.

Maybe the Sweet 16 clouded our memories, but don't I recall hearing the locker room issues Bassett was causing, DJ's unhappiness in how pleasing AB was dictating offense, some of the questionable character guys JG was assuming to win, etc... Then a couple years of JC unhappiness, then last year of SP. Isn't that like 4 of the last 5 or 6 years?

Thank you, but well aware. Simply pointing out to those asserting that ongoing chemistry issues date back beyond JC and SP. Actually spans back at least 3 administrations.
