Looking at records it looks as if all MAC teams but 3 played 13 non conference games with the others playing 12 which includes us. Is there any reason we only played 12 outside of we couldn't find another game?

Thanks!

Unless I'm mistaken, I think Saul has opted to not play that extra game in his two years. If you play in the "exempt tournaments" you can get the extra game to 13 games before conference season starts. I think because OUr guys played in the holiday tourneys the last two years, he didn't schedule the extra game?

I think that's basically correct. Coach Phillips has opted not to schedule the maximum number of games. I'm not sure if he thinks it's too many or if the team couldn't find a good opponent on the right date or what was the case.

I'm not sure what good an extra game would do. Unless we could schedule a "quality" team, it would be just another matchup against a team that hardly anybody wants to play. It might improve our RPI a bit, but that's really only an issue in trying to get an at-large NCAA bid. One more game this year wouldn't make enough difference in that regard.

Here's the total number of OOC games played vs D1 COMPETITION with the number of non-D1 games played in parenthesis-

MAC EAST
12 Akron(1)
12 Buffalo(1)
12 Kent St(1)
12 Fiami(1)
11 Ohio(1)
11 BGSU(2)

MAC WEST
12 Ball St(1)
12 Toledo(1)
11 WMU(2)
10 CMU(3)
9 EMU(4)
9 NIU(4)

Ohio could have gotten a 13th game the same way BGSU, WMU, CMU, EMU and NIU did, by scheduling more than 1 cupcake. I'm glad we didn't.

In reality Wednesday's match up isn't Ohio(9-3) v NIU(11-2), its Ohio(8-3) v NIU(7-2).

Thanks all, for the info. Would having the extra game have helped our very young team?

I seriously doubt it, unless it was against a MAC-level team or higher to get used to the better competition. This team has come a long way since November and has been playing well of late. Things seem to be coming together. Why risk injuries. Remember, Rico broke his leg in the last OOC game in '13-'14 and missed the entire MAC season.

The next 18 games will be the best education a young team needs.

I agree.

Scheduling is always an interesting conversation. I've probably said it 25 times on here, but I don't envy anyone who has to put together the non-conference schedule for a college basketball team. It doesn't stop me from asking questions of the thought process, but it's a tough task.
