First let me say I hate all things Pittsburgh and even more so after last nights football game. That being said, my daughter and I drove over to Pittsburgh to see the Blue Jackets play the Pens at the Consol Center. When they turned the lights down for the team starting line ups thousands (and I mean thousands) of fans turned their cell phone flash lights on. It looked awesome! This past Saturday at the Convo she and I did it and a few people picked up on it and turned their's on as well. I thing it would look pretty cool if it caught on! I noticed some fans have the glow sticks and I even purchased a portable flag pole that I was going to use at football games but now I'm considering brining it to the basketball games.

I am all for enthusiasm and traditions that create excitement and a sense of "team". My take is that those places with fun traditions already had the excitement and sense of "team" that created the tradition-often on an impromptu basis. I suppose it is a bit of the chicken or egg question. In my memory, most of the attempts of forced enthusiasm have been met with a resounding thud. Timing is everything. (Image what standing for defense would be like if the visiting team didn't score until after the first media time out for the first five games it was tried :)

The in-game experience is often stifled with the scripted time-outs that squelch the enthusiasm that has built. I would prefer the steady beat of the 110 before the game as well as during the timeouts when the cheerleaders and/or dance team could perform with some "pep" from the band.

The athletic department have attempted to find out what will make the game day experience better. I don't know what the results have shown but the one thing that should certainly help is the improved play and enthusiasm on the floor.

Hopefully something will help us to see the light and create an atmosphere that keeps bringing people back.
