Many turnovers and not enough defense. Poor ball handling. Lackluster game from Simmons at the point and Campbell missed lots of layups. Plus side was Block coming back and giving us 12 points off the bench. Long periods without a field goal. The better defensive MAC teams beating us. We don't play enough defense to win. Kaminiski kept this team in it. This would have been over a lot earlier if he hadn't been so hot in the first half.

Ease up, she has special needs.
Good for her that she enjoys herself but it really is nails on chalkboard.

Thought so too. Not sure why he kept picking up his dribble at the top of the key and then had to wait for someone to come open. Would rather see him attack more even if it means a couple more turnovers. We've got a lot of good shooters. We are most effective when he drives and kicks more.

Why do we not play any zone? I do not care if Saul Ball is not a zone form of basketball. This team is awful in man to man. No help. No rim protectors and we are too slow at ALL positions. I think we could be an effective zone team with wing traps. I am starting to doubt Saul Ball and this is getting embarrassing. 6-16 in the MAC under Saul is inexcusable. I have a Kent friend talking trash and I have nothing in response. Just a dead looking team.
Ya know, Saint Groce was barely over .500 in MAC play through 4 seasons. Give Saul some time and avoid knee jerk reactions.

Saul said there could be some changes to the defense but he'd rather keep trying to execute what they want to do.

Either way, defense is what really needs major improvement. True, Simmons didn't have his best game, and there are flaws to the offense, but as a whole, as Saul says, the offense has been good enough to win just about every time, even when we've had guys missing. Defense has been the struggle. Ohio's adjusted defense according to Ken Pomeroy is 296th.

To whomever was in the Chatroom talking about recruiting Indiana kids (maybe a little facetiously)...thought this might shed a little light. http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/columnists/gregg-doy... /

Good read. Crossroads of America is also the crossroads of coaches

She appears as though she might have developmental difficulties. No one in attendance seemed the least bit disturbed by her screaming.

Picking up the dribble is a hard habit to break. Even in victory this has occurred some but it is exacerbated when the other 4 guys also stop moving. A frustrating 23 minutes of basketball but the good stuff is encouraging.

I seem to remember your continual preseason gushing about how great this team would be and other posters on here were trying to rein you in. Now youre bailing. Maybe it would have helped you if you had been more circumspect to begin with. As an old codger, my advice to you is to hang in there and watch this program develop.

Picking up one's dribble, thereby leaving oneself without options? Is this not Point Guard Don't Do This 101?

Hey, whatever happened to the BIGMANZ art of grabbing a defensive rebound and turning in midair to land facing down court for the outlet pass for the potential fastbreak?

(Disclaimer: Haven't seen us at all this year...just reacting to the remark about picking up the dribble untimely/premature.)

Listening to the coaches comments after this game I continue to hear a somewhat confused guy. He needs to improve as it related to being more articulate. He goes back and worth on the same subject to where he leaves me more confused than clear on next steps, i.e. on D going to a zone. He gives you all the basketball reasons why teams play zone and he may do this, but he is trying something else because he hasn't given up in whatever his strategy is.
He talks like he is definitely frustrated and is impatient with this teams performance. Now if he envisioned us to be 3-1 in the conference then he clearly was being too optimistic. With all the new players, to think we would be better than we are was just not realistic.
I will say this again.....he needs to take a lesson from Frank on how to speak to the media.

Seriously??--the example you site could not be more uninformative or bland or coachspeak. Not faulting the sited for who he is or wants to come across as. But it doesn't work for me at all. I get significant lack of personality and/or uptightness. Anti-fleck. Which is more fun, works in today's world?

I'm moving to Indiana later this year. Do I have to complete some sort of basketball competency test to receive my driver's license?

I didn't see or listen to the game, but if a PG in college hoops has 9 assists can his play really be called "lackluster"? He almost had a double-double.

And yet it was. 7 shots taken, zero free throws attempted. He had half his assists in the last 2+ minutes of the game when the outcome was pretty much already decided. We are best when he attacks and he didn't attack much of the game. I hadn't notice him picking up his dribble so much in previous games.

Really laughed last night when the commentator made a funny as the Iowa State PG all everything, low turnover, high assist rate, timely scorer picked up his dribble. All I could hear in my head was this board melting down had he been one of ours. Yet, even in the second decade of the new millenium one of the best absentmindedly picked up his dribble.

It's definitely a pet peeve of mine when I watch young ballhandlers. Then I'll go out on a Monday or Thursday night and play pickup ball and do the same damn thing. Sometimes you just can't explain it.

Right, it happens. Maybe it was because he was going to pass, maybe it was because he was going to shoot or maybe it was because he thought he needed to stop and control the ball to avoid a steal. All can be valid reasons to pick up the dribble. It's better to stop and not make a bad pass or take a bad shot if in mid-thought you realize that's what it would be. But even it wasn't for a good reason, all players make mistakes.
