Discussion in a group text with Ohio alumn: what does OUr basketball team do well.
This has yet to be answered in 4.5 games.
I disagree. There is one thing we know they do well: *Attempt* 3-point shots. 😉
+1

Going 6-29 from the reservation will also get you stranded on the reservation.
Holy shit without actually looking it up is that the actual number? Good god.

Jumping on the Leom bandwagon that we need more coverage on this team for Reef's absence and how long he'll be out. He's obviously a key piece in what we're trying to do.

To say that this team is pressing is an understatement. Somehow they need to feel like they’re playing with house money. I hope they can learn to ignore the high expectations.
You could be right that the team is pressing. Some teams/people just don't respond well to the pressure and expectations.

That being said, whatever expectations existed for this team are long gone now.

We're in save the non-con from being a complete disaster and just hoping the team improves enough to compete in the MAC mode of expectations now.
I hate excuses but is Reef's absence really not being taken into account here? Dude could be a First Team All-MAC guy. He is worth 13 ppg, 2 spg and 4 apg. That is at least 21 ppg of offense. Not to mention his disruption on the defensive end.
And your point is???

Clearly, he's a loss. All teams lose players for a game, a handful of games or for the rest of the year. A loss is a loss. If he's out for the year, do we use that as an "excuse" as far as what happens hereafter? Next man up ............

I'm not trying to pile on JP. Today was probably his best game in a Bobcat uniform, but a couple of observations.

1) He's listed at 6'2. He's shorter than Ajay Sheldon who is listed as 6'1. Neither are their height. JP looks about 5'10. Dude is T-I-N-Y.

2) He does have a good shooting stroke, but his 3pt shot is basically a set shot. And it takes him 493 seconds to wind up before he releases it. I feel like I'm watching an 8th grader concentrating real hard to set his feet just right, balance the ball just right, then let it fly.

3) He's a competitor - you can tell that, but he's super slow of foot on defense. He can not be a primary on-ball defender or we're going to get killed with penetration (and have been - and is a reason why we miss Miles Brown and Reef so bad right now).

4) He's a pretty good passer and crafty with his dribble. But he turns the ball over way too much.

5) With his diminutive stature and slow release, he's never going to be a big scorer b/c he just can't get his shot off inside OR out.

That being said, no we don't need to scout Ping.

I haven't been able to watch a ton yet, but this is what I was most taken aback by on him. I watched like 20 minutes of the Illinois State game and his guy basically gets to their spot whenever they want.

I do think getting Reef back would help a lot with our perimeter defense, just in the sense that he can guard the other team's best perimeter player and we can hide Pav somewhere.

He’s definitely tiny and liability on defense, but I’m not sure it’s fair to say he’s never going to be a big scorer when he’s already proved that he can be during his season at Wofford.

He had ten 20 point games that season and I think we can all agree the SoCon is better than the MAC at this point.

His game highs last year at Iowa State were 9, 11, and 13 against DePaul, WVU, and Florida A&M in less than 30 mins (16 mins against WVU) of PT. Outside of the latter, that’s all better comp than what he’s going to be facing in MAC play.

It's not lost on me that it's possible Pav's back injury is playing a role in my observations above. Maybe he gets better lateral movement on D and maybe he gets a quicker release on O.

For our sake I hope that's true.

It seems like eight out of every 10 times he penetrates the key, he has no idea what he's going to do with the ball.

MTSU drops 95 on S Florida and wins 95-88. 12 of 23 from 3. Built a huge lead in the 1st half and held on.

What exactly was his injury? This is the first I've heard of it.

If his recovery makes him more explosive/quick that would be awesome
