In the game notes vs JMU they have written:

"When referring to the Bobcats, please use Ohio. Ohio University
is acceptable when using other institutions’ full names, and OU
is acceptable as a second reference. Please do not use Ohio U."

I laughed.

Have we ever instructed people like this before? It always felt more like a running joke on this site than a real thing.

Quick scan of the game notes vs Kent I don't see it.

Yes, this wording, or something very similar, has been used for years.  Back when they actually printed a press guide it was in those guides.  Certain dumbass x-jocks, particularly one from Toledo, apparently didn't or couldn't read it.  Almost all schools have something similar in press guides about the way to refer to their schools.

Here, for instance, is what is in Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's style guide, which I'm sure is in some form also in their athletic press guides:

Our official name is Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University but "Virginia Tech" is used in all but formal occasions. Virginia Tech is used in news releases, feature articles, academic journals, and publications and on the Web.

When using the full name of the university, never use an ampersand instead of "and." Never use VPI&SU, VPI and SU, VA Tech, Va. Tech, or Virginia Tech University. "Tech" is acceptable after a first reference to "Virginia Tech," but it should not be used repeatedly or solely. "VT" is acceptable only in limited, informal situations, such as a news headline or email subject line, where space is tight. Do not use "VT" in body copy, in titles of publications, on signs (if space permits), or in any "formal" publication.

"VPI," which was the university's acronym/nickname from 1896 to 1970, should be used only in historical contexts. The same is true for "VAMC," the university's acronym/nickname before 1896.

Yes, we had two former AD’s who would contact media companies and other schools over this issue.

And Branding and building a brand is important.

Yes this has been a concerted effort for decades and been discussed here many times. I fully support it...to suggest you have to add a U at the end of our rightful name degrades us and our brand. I think it has been very successful over all. We are referred to as Ohio significantly more than in the past.
