I was curious how the MAC schools stacked up in terms of followers of the main Athletics account. I was very pleased to see Ohio ranked easily #1. Below are the numbers. I looked up Marshall and a few others just because.

Ohio - 25.2 K
UMass - 18.1 K
BG - 15.4 K
Ball State 15 K
NIU - 14.8 K
Miami - 14.1 K
Kent - 12.1 K
CMU - 11.6 K
Buffalo - 10.2 K
Toledo - 9.4 K
Akron - 8.3 K
EMU - 6.9 K
WMU - 4.6 K

Marshall - 16.3 K
Cincinnati - 77.3 K
Dayton - 26.4 K
Xavier - 12.1 K
East Carolina - 21.6 K
Southern Miss - 26.9
Illinois State - 18.8 K
Missouri State - 19.6 K
Wichita State - 49.2 K
Jame Madision - 16.5 K

I feel this is a fairly positive sign that Ohio grads are engaged with the program and staying plugged in which can only be seen as a positive. I am really surprised at Western but I will tell you I quickly looked at the football page at it was in the 9K range if I remember correctly. If I were athletics I would absolutely begin to aggressively try to grow this number as a way of continue to engage alumni.

That's a good question. I started following on Twitter probably a year ago. I assume the majority of those followers come from a sub 50 demo but who knows.

No. I just think this means we have some engaged alumni and I am bored with nothing else going on at the moment. Not to mention it's an off night for the teams. :)

We have a long way to go. Elvis has 234,000 and he's been dead 38 years. It is a slow night.

What amazes me is that Tricky Dick is still following people - almost 900 of them.

This is all pretty funny, including what we end up doing when bored between games. Has anyone read "Fever Pitch" by Nick Hornby? Brilliant self-analysis of the obsession of fandom. Yes, the particularly intense fandom of British football, but fandom that resonated with me none-the-less.

Shouldn't they grow this for basketball too? On Twitter, @OhioMBasketball with 8800 followers, @OhioFootball with 5800 followers, @OhioWBasketball with 4800. The main @OhioBobcats account at 16,600+

So, reading between the lines, and making the numbers do what I want them to do, this says to me we're a basketball school. ;)

I'm curious where you got the 16,600 +? When I look at the main Ohio Atheltics Twitter page it shows 25.2 K followers. Ohio Basketball 6.8 K and Ohio Football 9.8 K.

Like I said I was bored and in the age of new media and ESPN 3 I was curious as to how the Ohio fans compared to similar schools in terms of social medial following. You would hope since Ohio seems to have a decent amount of fans connected that also means a fare share are tuning into games. Also in the long term maybe some join the Bobcat Club and begin to financially support the department. Speaking of the Ohio Bobcat Club, they have 1,798 Twitter followers. Come on people!!!! Let's push them over 1,800 by the end of the day!!!!

tell that to those schools in the Valley and Big East that have not sniffed the tourney in years.....they would still tell you they are basketball schools. Why waste a perfectly good post?

You guys are sniffing the right tracks for building a brand! Take a look at Clemson. They have a social media staff in their athletic department that has over 20 people! They are light years ahead of just about everyone. Very interesting.

It would be my gut feeling that you're more a football guy, and therefore might have found my comment annoying or insulting.

I'm just curious though, is there a "real" basketball school in the MAC in your opinion? Akron maybe?

Agreed - as one example, if Creighton misses the tournament again this year, are they still not a "real" basketball school? To that end, what is a real basketball school?

That IS interesting. It's the obvious direction of our society and makes a lot of sense to have staff dedicated to that.

Here's the numbers I came up with in checking Twitter accounts for each MAC school's football and men's basketball teams. Every school has more followers for football than men's basketball, which makes sense. Generally speaking, the ones that are good at football have higher football followings and the ones good at basketball have higher basketball followings. NIU is first in football and last in men's basketball. There are only a few that were slightly surprising. Toledo doesn't do well with Twitter and neither does Kent. Ball State does really well. Some of the men's basketball teams barely have more followers than @BobcatAttack.
FB BB
NIU 15.0 (1) 1.3 (12)
Ball St 14.1 (2) 3.7 (4)
CMU 11.8 (3) 5.3 (3)
BG 10.3 (4) 4.8 (6)
Ohio 9.9 (5) 6.3 (1)
WMU 9.1 (6) 1.6 (11)
Buff 8.7 (7) 3.6 (5)
Akron 8.4 (8) 5.8 (2)
Toledo 8.2 (9) 2.3 (8)
Miami 6.1 (10) 2.9 (7)
Kent 6.1 (11) 2.3 (9)
EMU 5.9 (12) 1.9 (10)

Ohio can be branded. It is a brand. It's how Ohio is being branded that's being called into question I believe.

But not 20 if that's accurate. That would definitely be a sign of losing sight of why universities exist in the first place.

No way are they anywhere near as good as the MAC. I bet they can't get 24-7 news about the Browns and Cavs (or cat antics) on their feed. So we've got that going for us...which is nice.
