With regard to March MAC tournament runs; is this going to be a Coach Groce like team of 2012 making a serious run with peaking players, or is this going to be one of those Coach Hunter teams with peaking talent that just couldn't quite get over the hump into the Big Dance? There is an extremely fine line between success and failure at that particular juncture. We will know the answer to that $64,000 question in about a month.
I think this team is more like 2011 than 2012. That team had talent but was very young, DeVaughn and Tommy were the only upperclassmen playing significant minutes. Bobcats finished the regular season 17-14(9-7) but at one point were 12-13(5-6) before winning 5 of their last 6 regular season games, starting with a road win at Buffalo in mid February. That was also the season they lost a 4OT game at St Bonnie and lost a 3OT game at home to Fiami. In spite of finishing the regular season strong the Bobcats lost in the 2nd round to Ball St in OT and went to the CIT where they finished 1-1.
Hopeful for success this year, expectant of success next year.
I honestly think this feels like 2005 all over again. The 03-04 season was awful, like 14-15. And then out of nowhere, a group of young guys who haven't really played all that much together got on a run in late January, February and March and made noise the following year.
Mychal Green was the JUCO transfer who could shoot ala Kenny. Jordy, Gavin and DT making impacts as freshmen like Fears and Williams. Campbell and Setty providing the leadership like Harbut and Halbert. Mike Laster providing key minutes like Whitney Davis. And Jaaron the x-factor reminds me of Sonny Troutman even though Sonny wasn't the PG. Sonny used to make plays when Ohio needed them and Jaaron is taking that role.
A lot of parallels to a few Bobcat teams of the past.
