Nobody to blame for this loss but ourselves. Too many mistakes. Too many turnovers, I counted a minimum of 4 if not 5 missed shots at the rim. I know Setty had 3 of them, and obviously the missed free throws. All that being said, for a huge part of the second half it was a 1-2 possession game and we had more than enough chances to tie or take a lead. Open shots didn't go down. It was disappointing all around, considering how winnable the game was.

A few observations from last night:

-It wasn't Jaaron's worst game, but it obviously wasn't great. In fact, I thought the only reason it wasn't a big blowout was because of his ability to get the ball inside. Yeah he had eight TOs which were bad, but he had eight assists as well to sort of make up for it. I was more disappointed in his FT shooting, and you could tell he was too.

-Really surprised Saul didn't go to Laster off the bench to guard Williams earlier. For whatever reason, you could tell pretty early on that Williams had Jordy's number. I know Saul has to leave Jordy in there for offensive purposes, but Williams was on fire last night. I would have loved to see Laster get in there and check him.

-Johnson for Akron impressed me big time. He's improved a ton since the last time I saw him play. He's just much more patient on the block. When he gets in a hurry, he's not that great and I think we saw a couple of rushed shots last night. But when he takes his time, he is devastatingly effective both scoring and passing to open shooters.

-That being said, why was Ohio even trying to double him? To me, Akron is a good enough team on the perimeter (leads the MAC in most 3-pt categories), that I almost take the good with the bad. Let Johnson score as much as he wants down there but STAY ON THE SHOOTERS. That's where Ohio struggled last night. Once Johnson kicked out on the double team, the Defense was late getting back to the shooters. Tony, Wadly and Doug can at least slow Johnson down or even better match him for scores on the other end. Just don't let his passing beat you.

-Execution was lacking in crunch time, especially on the two huge stick backs by McAdams and Kretzer late in the game. Those killed the Cats. Gotta check out. Find someone and go get the ball. Don't just stand there and wait for it!

-I think Ohio was 9th in the country in FT shooting before last night if I remember correctly. I'll take last night's game as a fluke. Just incredible how many missed FTs from guys who normally make them and also missed layups. Make those easy ones and this is a completely different outcome.

-Overall, disappointed in the loss but I'll chalk it up to growing pains for this team. Akron is battle-tested and this kind of loss could help the guys realize what it takes to get it done. Get back off the mat and beat NIU on Saturday.

I thought Doug Taylor looked good when he stepped in for Campbell late in the 1st half. He held his own defensively and was able to get some good looks up in the low post. That encourages me about what he will be able to give us moving forward.

Next year we still have Campbell. After that, Taylor is going to be our go to PF who is more of a banger rather than a Setty type hybrid-wing.

It's looking now like we'll be lucky to see a .500 MAC mark. Unless you're a top-four seed in the MAC Tourney, you're just dreaming.

Sucks trying to be patient and wait for the future.
Remember what we our MAC seed was in 2010 when we won the MACC and beat Georgetown?

No kidding, there are always so many empty seats in the 100 levels, but you never see them for sale as single game options on ohiobobcats.com. You hardly see any on Stubhub, Vividseat, etc. either. I bought two tickets to NIU this Saturday in Section 3 on Stubhub and they were 2 of maybe six available in the lower bowl. What the heck is happening to all those tickets?

This year the tournament goes back to the single bye for the top 4 teams. While still an advantage, it's not the insurmountable advantage the double / triple bye been the last few years.

As a side note... If the MAC Tournament started today, Ohio would be the #7 seed. (https://twitter.com/MACSports/status/694747329748975616 ) It will settle out some, but right now the middle of the pack is pretty bunched up.

I don't know the numbers, but I would guess that 50% of those seats are held by people who live more than an hour away. Maybe people aren't driving the hour plus as much as they used to? I drove the 190 mile round trip last night solo. It's not a piece of cake to find someone willing to drive down on a Tuesday night, especially when the game is on TW Sports and ESPN3.

I think this game came down to uncharacteristic missed FT's, and a few too many turnovers and simple mistakes. I was looking that the stats with about 2:30 to go, and if our guys had made their usual 75%, the game would have been a one possession game instead of an 8-9pt game. Take away the 2-3 turnovers that led to easy points, and/or the two late tip in's that were allowed, and they're right there. It was an opportunity missed, that's for sure.

Excuses, excuses. I think SP deserves the 3-4 years to get his own team in here. But last night was EXECUTION. Dumb game plan to give them open 3s. I give them 2 in the lane all night vs leaving their shooters (very good ones) open at the 3 point line.

Then, as has been pointed out, we just don't get off our feet to finish at the rim. Missed a ton of bunnies at the rim. Simmons had a very bad game with 8 turnovers...forced way too much. But, man, he made some really great passes too. He'll mature. I thought Dartis and KK played their usual defense...not very good. In closing, we missed a ton of shots and FTs.

That's it, game over and get better. Next...

Last 4 minutes play-by-play posted below. A lot of things in here you don't like:

-At the 2:17 mark, Treg takes a quick 3 just nine seconds after Akron scores. Ohio was down nine at the time. Certainly not a time to start chucking 3s.

Ohio went 5-for-5 from the field at one point down the stretch, really looked good on the offensive end, and yet hardly made up any ground on the scoreboard. Needed just one stop on the defensive end with 5-6 minutes left and I think it's a much different, closer ending. Then the free throws woes just killed any hopes.

He was a difference maker last night but his play brings up one of my biggest pet peeves. I hate that big men can just back down a defender a foot at a time. Allowing that makes it impossible to defend some players (see Shaq). If you are in good position and the man with the ball hits you with his butt and knocks you back a foot that should be a charge. If the defender did the same thing he would be called for a foul.

It's funny you say that, because I sat there saying Doug should just plant his feet and let Johnson run him over. Whether it would have been called I don't know. Is that a strategy worth considering against Johnson? I don't know.

Disagree - Effort was not the difference - Execution was
Agreed. If anything we were too aggressive. That and Akron is a very good team particularly now that they are getting everybody healthy. That being said I thought we showed we can play with them. We just shot ourselves in the foot way too often. For a good FT shooting team we could not afford to have a night like we did last night. Add stretches where we forced shots, particularly some contested threes early in the shot clock. Any loss is frustrating to watch but there were quite a few positive takeaways as well.

I remember one of our players in the 70's, Steve Scaggs I think, who would do that bit by bit backwards push towards the basket and then twist around and score. It takes time and a couple of times we got over last night and stripped the ball out of the Akron players hands. But as another poster pointed out, it leaves an open shooter outside to kick it to then. I tend to agree with the thought that the defender should just hold his ground, not shuffle his feet and then when the ball handler pushes back so far, tumble over like a chopped tree. The referee would have to realize that the ball handler came into the occupied space of the defender. It was frustrating to watch though last night as the Akron bigs seemed to just muscle the ball up over and over.

Taking that a step further, how many times has Tony been called for that in his career on the offensive end? Sometimes the defender would just fall over and they called the charge.

I don't know that anyone other than Gavin or Treg has taken a charge this year. Someone needs to step in the lane.

I didn't think we doubled their big post players very much. Akron didn't kill us with threes. They live from three so they are going to get looks from there. I don't think we "gave" them many of those shots.

I do think there is a tendency based on how our team plays defense for 3pt shooters to get open in the corners on the back side of either a double team, or help defense. I don't sit and watch tape, but it seems like a tendency to me.

I have said it before, I'll say it again, and I have a feeling I'll say it until he's gone: I'll never question Treg Setty's motor or hustle, I'll always question his judgement and ability. Yes, I know he scored some points last night, but look a little closer. He missed 3 bunnies at the rim. He took the ill advised 3 mentioned above early in the shot clock when the game wasn't really out of hand. He missed a bunny late in the 2nd half that would have been a 3 point play opportunity...then goes to the line and bricks both free throws. Really stupid turnover to end the first half that nearly (should have) cost us 3 more points. The intentional foul at the end, come on man. The game is over, stop hacking guys. He will never be caught not giving 100% effort, but man he makes a lot of really dumb plays, especially for a senior.

Basketball observations:

- We could've easily had that game and I thought it was pretty even play. I come away thinking we can hang with them.
- We didn't catch many breaks...the 2 that come to mind are the 3 pointer that everyone thought was after the shot clock (their first points of the game), and the Akron player stepping out of bounds on the baseline before dishing it out for a 3. Add to that lots of balls rolling around and off our rim and the free throw shooting and I just felt we weren't catching many breaks.
- That said, they could've hurt us a lot more than they did with their 3 point shooting. Given the amount of open looks they had, we have to be happy with their 32%.
- Simmons was erratic...he has some good moves and ball handling skills but takes too many risks. Reminds me of Brett Favre at QB.
- I feel really comfortable with our bigs with Tony, Wadley, and now Doug Taylor. I'd like to see 2 of the 3 on the court at the same time every now and then.
- No denying KK has been disappointing. I'm still happy to have him and hopeful, but his shooting just hasn't been as advertised and not enough to make up for some other flaws in his game. Still believe he can click at any moment.
- I really wanted this one, everyone in the building did. I hate losing to them.

Non-Basketball observation:

- I'm so happy Kretzer will never be in the Convo again. I'm sure he and his family are lovely people, but I'm done seeing them.
- The new frozen lemonade is delicious by the way. It isn't chunky like a sno-cone, but isn't runny like a slushy. Bravo and happy to have my seats so closely located to their booth.
- Halftimes are brutal these days. Nothing against the singers, I just don't look for that in my halftime entertainment. And if we do have singers, let's give them better audio equipment so it sounds better.
- It is embarrassing to have so many floor seats empty for TV purposes. Would be nice to have a seat upgrade lottery or something to fill those seats, but it is hard when they're sold just unused.

I'm 220 miles from the Convo. I get season tickets and make 5-6 games a year, almost never on weekdays. I'd happily give my tickets away to someone in need, but I'd rather see the school sell tickets and get more revenue. My barren lower bowl seats are essentially a donation, and it's not like there aren't plenty of options to buy other ones.
