This Bobcat team has a terrific offensive package, but our defense is horrific. Buffalo will do the same thing that BG has done the last two games, "ram the lane". In those two games the number of layups and jams were unbelievable. The two Beef guards that they use are terrific driving the lane and they are very quick.

We do not have quick feet so I am hoping that Coach P would try some type of zone that can prevent those lane drives and protect the 3 line.

So we played horrific defense all the way through winning 8 out of 10 games and a five game winning streak? We did play bad D up at BG, but overall we've been getting better.

The numbers support that they've played better defense as well. Since the point they were 1-3, they have moved up the charts a few spots in most defensive categories.

We had been doing a much better job of stopping penetration but clearly had a letdown in the 2nd half against BG. We aren't naturally a good defensive team so we have to work at it 40 minutes a game. We clearly were a little gassed at the end with Block out. Hopefully this will be a teaching moment for Saul. Time to refocus.

Here's where they stand in the MAC. A LOT better than before:

4th in scoring margin

8th in FG% defense

7th in 3pt% defense

4th in rebounding margin

4th in blocked shots

Still last in turnover margin and steals, but Ohio is 5th in Assist/TO ratio and 5th in Assist per game, which actually makes sense. They don't turn it over THAT much, but they don't create any either.

I have noticed from watching the team that they don't gamble in one-on-one situations very much, which would explain the lack of steals. They wait for the O to make a decision, which sometimes leads to deep penetration into the lane.

Usually our guys are two steps behind the offensive players first move.

In his radio post-game vs. BG, Saul said he didn't say anything about the defense the last few games because he didn't want to jinx things, but he saw a defensive meltdown coming. He said the last few games weren't very good and it all culminated vs. BG.

They better be MUCH better vs. UB or this could go sideways on them. A potential MAC regular season title could spiral all the way to a road game in the MAC tourney in round one.

I think they bounce back....or at least I hope they do

Bobcats will need to control the driving to the basket of the Buff's guards and wing players. More help and recover than what we saw at BG will be needed to win this one. Go Cats !
