If John groce never left . I love Saul but if you look at johns last recruiting class it makes me sick to my stomach because of what we could have been.

An NBA prospect in Caris Levert (Michigan)

The OVC player of the year Evan Bradds (Belmont)

An elite shot blocker in Anthoney Allen (OK ST)

We would have been adding just that to a team that ALMOST went to the elite 8. If we didn't get lay ups blocked non stop and DJ had an okay game and not a awful one we could have an elite 8 banner.

When we all wish we could be Gonzaga or Witchita , remember we probably should have been .

We would have only been adding Levert to that class. Bradds is a year younger.

There have been a number of good players that never made it to Ohio after committing. Daviyon Draper was committed to us for like a week and he had an outstanding year at FIU.

Yah, but we would likely be without MAC player of the year Antonio Campbell. He would be floating around somewhere like Illinois State or worse Kent State.

I am optimist, somewhat of a sentimentalist and I love tradition. However, I would like to think I understand that when I look at a scenario I see life through that prism. Coach Groce was a popular coach with most of us including me, especially the last year. Do we really want to go back and look at threads the year before he left? How many people were complaining that year that with all of the talent we possessed that we were dreadfully under performing?

I can only imagine had Coach Larry Hunter taken the Kansas State job in 1994 that for years and probably even now, people would be singing his praises as if his image was on display somewhere on Mt. Olympus in the imaginary pantheon of famous coaches. Coach Hunter was relieved of his duties by his alma mater in 2001. Coach Groce's future is hanging in the balance to be determined by the administrative powers that be in Champaign. Had Coach Groce stayed who knows what might have happened, would he be as popular as he was the year he left, or would he descend to the level he was the year prior?

I do believe with the talent that Coach Danny Nee had coming in during the mid 1980s the Bobcat faithful could have expected big things. I think we safely say that most of the posters on this board could not have done any worse than Coach Billy Hahn, though he might have been the most likable coach ever to grace the Convo. However, you just don't know.

It is rather interesting to speculate, but in no way can be know for sure what would have happened, no matter how great the talent level would have been. Just ask Larry Hunter who probably wonders every day why he didn't go to a power conference and make the big money, only to be forced out in the area in which he grew up.

Groce leaving was inevitable. If not when he did, a year or two later at the most.

I really would have liked to have Coach Groce back for Sweet 16 group senior year.

But, I'm more than happy to have Saul in Athens. Life is good.
