. . . {T}his is probably because he was from Athens County. I am not sure most students who come to Athens realize what it is like to have someone from your community do well. I am not from Athens, but from a small working class town in the northern half of the state. When on the rare occasion you do have someone who becomes a stellar athlete or a success of any kind it generates a great amount of pride and you will defend the individual at pretty much all cost. Coach Hunter played for the Plains High School right before the merger that would end up being the new building called Athens High (now in the Plains.)

Nothing like people coming from big cities, especially the East Coast disparaging Athens. I remember all too well a few students in my dorm and classes mock Athens and the people associated with the university. Thankfully they transferred up the road to Columbus, but that only makes people in Athens or any small town defend their native sons and daughters all the more.

Just imagine how the locals felt when they heard that Coach Hunter, who could have taken Kansas State's offer and moved to Power Conference school, was fired even though he was always winning close to 20 games a year. Then to add gasoline to the fire, the locals hear after a couple of years that the new coach's wife can't wait to leave Athens (I have no idea if this was true or not, but it certainly was the scuttlebutt among the athletic community.) Perhaps this is why people are very defensive concerning Coach Hunter and even Coach Solich (a Cleveland kid who still is fondly remembered as a gusty Parma Holy Name football kid.)
+1 This is a good point. Also, it was -- at least in the short run -- not a good monetary decision as a number of local season ticket holders did not renew because of this firing. I know some who have never come back to an OHIO game since. There is still resentment in some quarters, especially in some of the rural areas surrounding Athens, about this firing. Personally, I was getting a little tired of Hunter's less than stellar post-season performance in his last few years, and I understood the reason for his firing, but I'm not sure it was the wisest move ever made by an OHIO AD.

Bobcat2000 is acting like I would if I wanted to mimic the type of "Un-Informed" fan....It's either a great parody account or the perfect fan that fits the mold.

Monroe, the point of my post is not to argue about the merits of Coach Hunter of even Coach Solich (though I like both.) My point is that for many locals in Athens they see Coach Hunter as one of them (the townies that are made fun of by the elite students and donors who live far away.) They see a guy who could have left for a power conference but did not. It still angers them that he got fired and ended up in Western Carolina, while Coach O'Shea ended up back in his home (greater Boston area.) As I have said before, I can't imagine a man with Coach O' Shea's record who still is in Division I. I wish him well, but he has led a very charmed life, whether he realizes or not.

The same can't be said for Coach Hunter and that is what gets under the skin of some Bobcat fans, especially those who live in Athens County and knew Coach Hunter (or his family) when he went to the Plains High School.

(Ohio Cat Fan) just saw your post and wanted to give you kudos for it!

Cullowhee (sp?) North Carolina is not exaclty a place blue chip basketball players are going to flock to. It really is in the middle of BFE.

However, when TOS was hired and there were suggestions that Rick Byrd from Belmont should have been the next coach instead, people acted like somebody took a dump in their cereal bowl over it. TOS was the next John Wooden to them.

Byrd now has over 700 wins. How did Tim O'Shea end up? Is his winning % in his conference 76% like Byrd's? Seven NCAA tournament appearances like Rick?

Am I telling people I told them so? What do you think?
